Age Group Rank = 3/18
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast - banana, yoghurt, egg
Mobilisation exercises
Event warmup:

Walking and arm stretches
Swim
  • 37m 24s
  • 1900 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt confident with swim and as I was in second bunch I got to draft a bit then kicked for the finish, 5th out of the water in the 45+ wave.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to get goggles with corrective lenses.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

Felt like this transition could have been faster.
What would you do differently?:

Rehearse the order of activities and use new wetsuit.
Bike
  • 3h 00m 4s
  • 90 kms
  • 29.99 km/hr
Comments:

I enjoyed the first lap over the bridge as I have never done this before then the waterfront was straightforward as it is part of my training route.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except more time on the bike to get faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Still think I could do this better.
What would you do differently?:

Rehearse the order of activities again
Run
  • 1h 57m 38s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 05m 35s  min/km
Comments:

As usual wanted to do negative split but didn't despite stopping for the loo on the first lap. My feet felt like they were blistering on the balls but I decided not to stop and fiddle with shoes. Just as well I didn't as my feet were fine when I took my shoes off.
What would you do differently?:

Find a solution for burning feet. it might have been the walk to the swim start on spikey bridge and surface.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretches, walking

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim technique, Strength on bike and burning feet while running

Event comments:

This was a very well organised and friendly race on an amazing course. Unfortunately this was the final year for this event in Auckland.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
