Pre-race routine:

I woke up around 4 am to eat a breakfast of oatmeal and a banana. I arrived at the shuttle location and waited in a small line to ride the shuttle over to the start line. At the race start, I sat around until it was time for the race to start.
Event warmup:

Nothing much, some minor stretching.

Comments:

I had decided to start the race just behind the 3:10 pace group and see how things went. For the first few miles, my right calf was a little tight, but it loosened up and was not an issue. The course was pretty crowded with the half marathon going on at the same time, but I was able to stay with the 3:10 group. After completing the first lap and heading back on to the island, my stomach began to have some issues. I made a quick pit stop around mile 13 and felt fine after that. I debated picking up the pace to try and catch-up with the 3:10 group and decided to go for it. I ran about 3 miles at sub 7's to catch them. As we began the 2nd entry into Landfall, it was just one other guy and the pacer in the group. We were about 1 minute ahead of pace and just kept steady on the splits. At about mile 25, I decided to push a little harder and ended up finishing strong. I took gels at miles 5, 10, 15, and 20 and water/gatorade about every other aid station. I had completed my training using the Hanson Plan for a 3:12 so I was able to go a little faster than expected.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, other than figuring out what the stomach issues were about.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some water and walked around a bit. I had a couple of pieces of pizza and a few other snacks before heading back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much

Sounds like you paced yourself very well in this race! Congrats on a good performance. Use Hanson's myself, going through my 4th time (currently week 15, Boston right around the corner) -- 3rd marathon, + a 1/2.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
