Sunny
Total Time = 2h 11m 30s
Overall Rank = 80/157
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 11/14
Pre-race routine:

I only live a couple of miles away, so my girlfriend and I biked to the event after getting plenty of water and very light breakfast. I also had to check I had everything about 50 times...
Event warmup:

I had about 15 minutes from time of arrival to get everything into transition. Afterwards, I walked around in the sun, and made last second wardrobe changes. It was cold but the sun was way too hot.
Run
  • 24m 49s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 58s  min/km
Comments:

I ran my fastest 5K effort this season...how stupid of me. I felt great after the 5K and was super excited to try my new TT bike.
What would you do differently?:

Speed work so that this is my 80% effort. I'm in a new age group this year, and although this is a good time for me, I was very much the small fry.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

I wasn't extremely quick, but I was cold and I didn't want to practice jumping into my bike on its first ride. I put my shoes on and away I went.
What would you do differently?:

Leave the shoes in the pedals, but on a much warmer day.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 37s
  • 20 miles
  • 16.30 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my first time on my new Transition Pro...so I was very excited to get going, but needed quite a few adjustments. I was lucky this was only a 20 mile ride. For the most part the climbs were slow but steady and the straight-aways I was passing people which made my happy (I would have looked like a tool in my aero helmet otherwise). I lost my bottles twice however and ultimately left them the second time...
What would you do differently?:

Secure bottles, work on gearing, get fitted
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

I felt good getting off the bike and unclipped/ran with ease. A little slow, but with warmer weather I'll be out in a flash
What would you do differently?:

Warmer weather - shoes off on bike and slip on running shoes.
Run
  • 28m 38s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 44s  min/km
Comments:

I was a bit clompy coming out of transition, but I found my stride fairly quickly. I had a more modest pace and mentally had to push myself more so than the first time around. I was still pretty happy with my time and did better than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Brick workout x 1million
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the family and grabbed some post race food. Grabbed my bike and prepped to bike home. I wasn't super sore, but was a bit tired. I knew I had to rest up for the Half Marathon part of the challenge the next day so I made my way home ASAP.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sore from injury, I need to fit better to my TT bike

Event comments:

A very fun race and I look forward to the 2 part challenge every year!

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.
