Overcast
Total Time = 55m 52s
Overall Rank = 13/96
Age Group = M 30-39
Age Group Rank = 2/18
Pre-race routine:

Afternoon race at 6:15, breakfast and lunch went off like normal, had a sweet potato as a snack before the race at 4:00. Then the standard anti-fatigues, gatorade, and a roctance.
Event warmup:

bike 3 miles with a 1 mile pickup set, then put the wetsuit on and swam 125m. the water was low 60's so I knew getting acclimated was absolutely madatory
Swim
  • 05m 45s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

lined up to the far left side of the swim start which is the shortest distance to the orange buoy turnaround. I was in line with a couple other very fast swimmers and drafted the entire swim leg. the turn was a bit of a washing machine as 100 men all crashed into the turn at the same time but I escaped, found my drafting partner and cruised into T1. This was my fastest open water swim ever. I though the course was short by my garmin clocked 508 yards and a couple other people also clocked 500+.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Really struggled to get a hold of my string on the wetsuit which cause me to slow more than I had intended to. My heart rate was about max at 180 bpm. Dipped my feet into the bucket to get the pine straw off and was out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

better luck with wetsuit doffing.
Bike
  • 26m 58s
  • 10 miles
  • 22.25 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was set to be fast but still don't have the best gearing for CT hills. The final corner is a sharp 90 to the right, my back wheel caught sand and I fishtailed hard, can't believe that I didn't go over but after regaining my composure got off the bike and into T2. I used castelli T1 stealth shirt on the bike under and wore it under the westuit during the swim. I took a 2nd roctance at mile 8.
What would you do differently?:

harder hill work and watch out for the sand.
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

due to rocks and pine straw chose to not flying dismount, got to transition mat and got shoes and socks swapped, got t1 stealth off and hit the run.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 21m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

all out and turned a negative split.
What would you do differently?:

maybe leave the AAA tri top in transition and just go with the AAA visor
Post race
Warm down:

cleaned up transitions, talked to a bunch of people (this was one of friendliest triathlons I have ever been apart of), jumped in the cold lake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing

Event comments:

This is one of the best race series that I have ever been apart of. The atmosphere was amazing and the turnout was huge for a local early season race. This is a must do race for a brand new triathlete to the seasoned triathlete.

pace wise run was strong 6:39, 6:58, 6:31 with slowest time going up the 100 foot climb in the middle of the race. heartrate was is the 190's-200's most likely due to bad battery in heartrate monitor so data is not important.
Course: The run is an out and back along the lake, with good shade and has a water aid station at the turn. https://www.strava.com/segments/1959355

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?
