Total Time = 5h 53m 20s
Overall Rank = 230/485

Age Group Rank = 41/66
Pre-race routine:

Camped at High Cliff- slept ok for being outside!
Event warmup:

Campground was 1 mile from the start- Drank a protein shake, got their at 5 AM (parking lot fills up fast), checked in, stretched, relaxed and was ready to go.
Swim
  • 36m 51s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

The shallow water didn't help since the swim is my strongest leg, I had a few sighting issues, but overall not bad.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Transition 1
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

missed the wetsuit strippers and didn't see anyone with sun block- fortunately I put some 50 spf on before the swim- but I still burnt.
What would you do differently?:

I put sun block on my neck and shoulders before the race, but not my face- next time I would do a better job and make sure I know where the volunteers were with sun block were!
Bike
  • 2h 49m 15s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Crosswinds up to 10 mph, overall pretty good, but my Garmin didn't work so I rode this all on feel.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Transition 2
  • 02m 53s
Run
  • 2h 21m 34s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, my Garmin didn't work so I ran by feel- I would run 90 seconds, walk 20, and also walked the aid stations
What would you do differently?:

I was a little disappointed in the run since this was my focus in training- but it was also my first trail run and there run was significantly more challenging than Racine.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade, Food and waited for my friend to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Specifically, weight (200 lbs) up 7 from my last half iron- training was fine- but I have to focus on my diet- too bad beer tastes so great :)

Event comments:

This is a smaller race- fun and casual- great volunteers (Gloria does a great job!)

3:30 minutes off my PR- which I blame on the ridiculous 1/2 mile hill at the start of the run. lol, but at least there was lots of shade and an interesting trail run once you got up there.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
