Age Group Rank = 1/13
Pre-race routine:

Peanut butter/banana/honey sandwich as usual at 6:30am.
Event warmup:

A short jog up to the Capitol building and back let me know it was going to be a slow day. Insanely hot and humid at 8am, 8:30 race start.
Did some dynamic stretches after the jog.
Run
  • 43m 33s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Not my best performance. Nowhere near a 10k race PR, but it's a tough course.
What would you do differently?:

Um, make it not so hot and humid?

Performance: Good
I think I gave up one spot total in the whole race. Had a guy come up and run with me until mile 2, just steady on my heels from about 0.75 to 2. We chatted briefly as we neared mile 2. When Mile 1 in 6:13, felt pretty manageable but too fast. Mile 2 in 6:14 and I decided to back off. He motored on by. By the time I neared mile 3, I was walking up the Pullen hill. Another guy that had been behind me passed me on that hill. Mile 3 in 7:40...ugh walking. Mile 4 in 6:54, which had a little walking in it. Just after Mile 4, I was reeling in the guy that had passed me just before mile 3. Between Mile 4 and 5, I got him. Also between 4 and 5, I had to walk again for a minute, and he passed me back. Mile 5 in 7:37, some walking through Boylan Heights. Between 5 and 6, I passed him back for good and put some distance on him. Mile 6 in 6:53, hurting.
Course: Slight uphill from start to first left. Rolling out to Boylan. Dips downhill to meet Western Blvd. Steady uphill up Western, then strong uphill to the turnaround on Pullen at the traffic circle. Downhill all the way back to Boylan, then strong uphill up Boylan. Rolling back along Hargett, net LONG downhill on Fayetteville.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
