Manitowoc Two Rivers YMCA
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 7h 00m
Overall Rank = 129/142
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 15/17
Pre-race routine:

Egg and Cheese Bagel Sandwich, Gatorade and Bottle of water.
Event warmup:

Registered, stretched, warm-up run and a few strokes in the lake.
Swim
  • 05m 43s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was in Lake Michigan. Beach was closed all year for E.coli, but open for the race? Definitely in the back of my mind. Swam way off course and had to scramble to get back in. Had a little trouble just staying relaxed, as it was my first triathlon.
What would you do differently?:

Stay on course, go to the inside and relax.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

First transition ever! Didn't know what to expect, but I think I did OK.
What would you do differently?:

Get velcro shoes vs. lace-ups.
Bike
  • 58m 15s
  • 16.1 miles
  • 16.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Biggest shock of the race. I thought I was going pretty well. Not a lot of passes, but was keeping up and only passed by the guys, geared for the bike. (Aero bars, solid wheels, etc.)
What would you do differently?:

Bike faster!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again, first time, but I thought it went faster that i had anticipated.
Run
  • 32m 26s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew the run would be my downfall. I'm a big guy and running is my weakest portion. Had to stop three times to walk off some cramping.
What would you do differently?:

Lengthen my stride and definitely run more often for training.
Post race
Warm down:

A light walk, pictures taken with family, bottle of water and a hot shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of focus, need more training.

Event comments:

Great first triathlon. Didn't know what to expect and now can prepare a little differently for the next.

Welcome to the addiction world of triathlons. Glad to see another Wisconsin racer in my age group. It looks like you are racing Devils Challenge in a few weeks. I may see you there.

I've thought of nothing else for the past couple of days. I can see how you can become addicted. My only regret is that i started late in the season. I just signed up for Devil's Challenge yesterday and looking forward to it. I reserved a campsite at the park, #89, stop by and introduce yourself. We can discuss pre-race "strategies" over some 12 oz. racing fuel.
