Pre-race routine:

Evening race, after work. Stuck in rush hour traffic... running late. Setup quickly and head down to the water.
Event warmup:

Stretch and swim for a bit.
Swim
  • 12m 45s
  • 400 yards
  • 03m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Time includes the run up the road to transition. First time I kept up w/ my group [mostly]... different swimming in the pack. A LOT of bumping and banging especially into and around the first buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Start a little more outside.
Transition 1
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Removed wetsuit and put shoes on at the beach.. will try doing in transition area next time. Looking to find a good balance as we need to run up a road to the transition area. Many do barefoot, I am not that adventurous.
What would you do differently?:

Glasses in helmet were face down. Rained a bit during swim so they were useless. I would place somewhere out of rain??
Bike
  • 30m 23s
  • 5 miles
  • 9.87 mile/hr
Comments:

Was a lot of fun. Many do not understand what "on your left" means. Very tough to pass in the woods.
What would you do differently?:

pass more on right if people aren't moving over.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Rack was too low for my bike, tried racking forward and wouldn't hold, had to run around the rack and rack it in reverse. Took time to drink from bike bottle - as I hadn't drank much on the trail.
What would you do differently?:

Try to drink a bit more on the trail. Arrive earlier and get a better rack position.
Run
  • 40m 39s
  • 5 kms
  • 08m 08s  min/km
Comments:

I don't train on trails so this is not familiar. I did not remember to bring socks, my feet were slipping and ended up with a couple of blisters. Very uncomfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Bring socks..
Post race
Warm down:

Drink water and remainder of bottle from the bike. Protein bar and diet coke on ride home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Performed at my current fitness level - if I want to get better / faster I need to perfomr more focused speed workouts.

Event comments:

Good weekly series. No post race activities until the last race of the year... Will be an awards picnic.

A great group of people, overall very friendly and fun! Recommend to anyone that is interested in trying out triathlons.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
