Pre-race routine:

Got kids to pass out coupons for Energice and Sof-Sole on windshields for me. Also set them up as volunteers at the water stop. Got Transition area set up.
Event warmup:

Light jogging, multiple trips to the bathroom (of course!), jogging into and out of transition to be sure and spot my bike. Light swimming a few minutes prior to race start.
Swim
  • 08m 43s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really was working hard. Also, water was very warm (even for me!) Unfortunately, a man in the wave ahead of us had problems on the swim and the lifeboat was all the way at the other end of the course. About 5 women swam out to help him before the boat got there. (The race director held up our wave a few minutes to give those ladies additional rest time. They were applauded when they returned to the bank).
What would you do differently?:

Shouldn't have tried so hard on the swim. I was very winded coming out, and it probably wasn't worth it to sacrifice my lungs so hard on the swim which may have made my bike a little slower. However, it was nice to see a better swim time.
Transition 1
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

Was still pretty winded from the hard swim and ~1/4 mile sprint just to get to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Very happy.
Bike
  • 30m
  • 10 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Extremely happy with the bike. Pushed hard the whole way, not even worrying about having enough for the run. I'm a distance athlete, I know there will be something left in the tank for that.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on it.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Could've been a little faster getting socks and shoes on, but overall not bad.
Run
  • 18m 35s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

This is my favorite part. Always can catch someone. Just kept up my pace and picked off people one at a time. Had to sprint to finish, because a spectator yelled "COME ON, YOU CAN CATCH HER!" Since there was not a woman in front of me, I knew I was the target. Had to put on the jets because someone was gaining on me. She finished right behind me. Great finish for both of us.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Gave it all I had.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, chatting, congratulating everyone for a good race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Old age! (just kidding!)

Event comments:

Had a great time. Had to hurry and clean up for church. Didn't even have time for the awards picture. Sorry guys.

Actual swim time was about 8:00 but had a long run before the transition area timer went off. Really worked hard on the swim since it's my weakest event.

What is the secret to speedy transitions?

Jen

Thanks Jen.  The secret is to live in a place where it's too warm to need a wetsuit.  Takes minutes of the transition times!

Sharon
