St. Petersburg, Florida
United States
MultiRace
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 07m 14s
Overall Rank = 55/304
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 4/17
Pre-race routine:

arrive early and "see" time move fast towards 0645 (transition close).no public bathrooms available for changing this date; bummer....
Event warmup:

little to none. too dark. scrambling amongst many folk. short spin on bike for ok gear. little jog but no stretching as is "ideal." Quick wade out wade in & here come the Oly guys already.
Swim
  • 08m 38s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

took in water, goggles and mouth. survived it.
What would you do differently?:

ck googles. remain more linear. elbows up. technique poor today but "rate" made up some I guess. breathing sucked too. Adrenaline mishandle...what else is new? Should be better for my "A" discipline. :-(
B+
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

new shoes and much need of practicing these techniques. luck of the exit crowding a factor as well. used wet shoes for pavement. benefit or cost?
What would you do differently?:

practice more. Could use some callous now, it seems (like the old days of youth)
better than last Tri. so.....
B- grade
Bike
  • 27m 25s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.88 mile/hr
Comments:

couldn't get 35.41kph/22mph despite no-little wind. bummed. what's it going to take? More "T"? More w.o./wgts for "power?" Technique? lighter me/bike? More aero?
Answer: "all the above."
What would you do differently?:

don't bike/run a brick the Sunday before event. Knees "cranky" all week long. Just missed my goal of 22mph. Gave what I had, for today.
A- grade.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

forgot the Jump off one foot technique of "yesteryear" focus. (used it once, maybe back in the day?)
What would you do differently?:

corner better the exit turns and be ready with one foot jump off & run to rack. put helmet on bars early in the run.
B grade.
Run
  • 26m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

legs tight from butt on down; which means....back too.
Heat/Humidity hampered some/many out there today it seems ('cept the running elites and young ins......) including me. Barely made 26'. I miss the old 25' days already. Legs "dead"??
What would you do differently?:

Will try to rest up and have fresher legs next Tri. Train smarter. No bricks btwn now and next; knees say "no." One a days, & if two, easy one/hard one. No hard twos. Got to get back to 25's again.
C+ grade. (25's are a B - B+ & 24's an A to A+....for now it seems)
Post race
Warm down:

pant pant.....splurged and had a cheeseburger, talked to some interesting fellow participants today. cheered on the podium winners.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

smarter training resulting in fresher legs/knees. pain is quite....the inhibitor to most folks, including me. IF recovered "fresh" off of painful workouts, then....races should be "all fun/games" and enjoyed. If not recovered then....it isn't. T-levels? Fast twitch muscle cells? Muscle relaxation? Less inflammation?

Event comments:

Ft Desoto closed those FABULOUS Showers/bathrooms of theirs. (Repair?)
"Expect the unexpected." No cars traffic is Great!!!! Bumpy, Rickety-rackety roads are not. When they ever repave these SMOOTH, this bike course will be the best in SW FL IMO. Swim is great. T1 could be shorter length. Bike...Good.T2 is good. Run on sandy beach road is good for joints, bad for legs/times overall.
Multirace does a very good job tho' with so few but energetic volunteers!

Don’t forget this is an incredibly big year for sport with the Olympics back in Athens where the modern Olympics started, and especially triathlon to make its second appearance.
