Old Orchard Beach, Maine
United States
Challenge
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 30m 46s
Overall Rank = 117/299
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 12/20
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition and ate a PowerBar while walking to the swim start which was about half a mile away.
Event warmup:

Walking to the swim start was enough of a warmup!
Swim
  • 24m 8s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Compared to Challenge Poconos my swim time had improved by a whopping 18 minutes! This was due to a number of factors: the ocean swim, a shorter course, and swimming with the current helped out a lot as well. Spotting was also much easier since the course was rectangular and there was a Ferris Wheel to help you spot the swim finish. Comparatively though, the other athletes in my age group also had better swim splits.
What would you do differently?:

Not much to change.
Transition 1
  • 04m 7s
Comments:

T1 was long due to the half mile run from the beach to transition. We literally had to run the whole length of the transition before we could get to the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Do a better job with the helmet.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 4s
  • 25 miles
  • 21.72 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall I did pretty good on the bike -- passing about 5 people in my age group. Very nice course with a great turnaround too - not too many sharp turns.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the rollers.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Finished in a pack of riders so had to find real estate to dismount from the bike.
Run
  • 51m 59s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

This was definitely my weakness as pretty much everyone I passed on the bike caught up to me on the run. Lost about 3 places here.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on my cadence.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice bath soak.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough bricks.

Event comments:

Great venue -- drink stations on run was evenly spaced out and lots of helpful volunteers!

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.
