Total Time = 3h 48m 54s
Overall Rank = 91/96
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 2/2
Pre-race routine:

Drove to race early. Breakfast two eggs with toast and coffee. Didnt really sleep great, but not as bad as some other races.
Event warmup:

Hopped in the lake about 20 minutes before race meeting. Swam around and floated a little. Also did a lot of walking around because i kept forgetting things in the car.
Swim
  • 35m 3s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim went well, beat goal by almost 5 minutes. Only kicked some of the time. Probably could have done better if I'd done more kicking. Sighting wasnt so hot--several times off course wide.
What would you do differently?:

Kick more. Try to practice sighting more often
Transition 1
  • 05m 44s
Comments:

LONG RUN up from the lake, including a flight of stairs. Walked most of it because it was uphill and I was pretty winded from the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have run some. Took too long getting my shoes on, so do that faster would be great!
Bike
  • 1h 38m 34s
  • 40 kms
  • 24.35 km/hr
Comments:

Bike went really well. Course was changed from what i had practiced two weeks previously, but it was ok. Two BIG hills by the turn around, of which there were four.

Ate two gus--okay, really ate half of two gus while smearing the rest all over my body, bike, and inside my bento box. Drank about half a bottle of powerade and a whole bottle of water. Hit my nutrition goals precisely.

Avg hr 162
15.0mph--exactly what I hoped for.

Stopped at third turn around to give another racer a tube.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was as good as i could hope for!
Transition 2
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

A little slow, but part of that is that i dismounted at the wrong line! Took the time to change socks for the run. Had a little trouble with getting my race belt on because my left hand was kinda numb.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more
Run
  • 1h 26m 45s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 41s  min/km
Comments:

Course much more hilly that I expected from the description. Ended up walking up the hills and running the flats and downhills, which seemed to work pretty well. This is the longest run I've ever done, so feel pretty good about the run. Beat my goal by about 4min.

Had to pee for most of the first four miles. Finally decided I was going to have to go, so found a quiet stretch of road and squatted. Disaster!! Ended up peeing doown my right legs--gross. Used powerade to rinse, but that was probably as bad, since it is the full sugar stuff!

Finish line was uphill!! WTF?!? That just seems mean!
What would you do differently?:

Next time, i sit on the grass to pee!! More run training too!!

Post race
Warm down:

Walked a little, drank some water and soda. I finished right as they were starting the awards, so stood around a lot watching those.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing but training and body fat. This was a great race that really showcased the training I've put in this summer!!

Event comments:

Course and volunteers were great. The organization was a little lacking. Post race food and drink were really ugh.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
