Subject: Raleigh, NC 2016 - What to expect
I am looking to do my 1st 70.3 and see there is one coming up to Raleigh, NC in June 2016. Is this a good 1st timer event? I know there is a bunch of hills in this area and was wondering how much of this is in the course. I live in a flat area (Hilton Head, SC) and really wouldn't be able to train well for elevation changes.
I think there is one coming here in October 2016, but might not want to wait that long. If it does come here make it my 2nd and have a good showing for the hometown crowd...
Or maybe a just look South in Florida for my 1st.. I grow up there, so I am use to humidity/heat..

While the Ironman 70.3 Raleigh race is an awesome event, I would not recommend it for you for your first half iron race.

1. It is a 2 transition race and while that is not a bad thing, the logistics could be overwhelming for a beginner.
2. Although it is not super hilly, it is not flat either. Since you are concerned with the hills, I would skip the race for 2016.

Here are 2 suggestions for you:

1. Try Charleston Half
2. White Lake Half

Both events have historically been held in April or May of each year. I believe White Lake Half is April 23, 2016.

Check Set Up Events website for details on both races.

There's also a Hilton Head 70.3 planned for 2016.

Agree with japarker2 on White Lake. It's a low(er) key event, flat as all get out, and logistics are simple when compared to races like Raleigh...

Thats a bummer.... My training ends right when the Raleigh event is, perfect timing. I am a good logistics person (Its sort of what I do for a living). Plus I hooked up with a local crowd that will pre run the course several times before the event.

As for the Hilton Head 70.3.. I plan to enter that as well.

PS: I didn't realize that these events were held with other organizers. I thought they were all through Ironman, thanks for shedding some light on the NOOB... LOL

Ive had a couple people on this board tell me it's fine for a first timer. They said the hills were rolling but no steep grades and nothing too crazy. Same for the run. I get the transitions being a pain with the shuttle and all that, but is this race really that tough?

Hilton Head is not happening in 2016 per a post by Tom Z (WTC RD) on Slowtwitch. If B2B becomes an Ironman race, as rumored, HH 70.3 will never happen.

Hilton Head Chamber of Commerce or whatever released a statement today stating Ironman withdrew from further dealing with Hilton Head as they have chosen another location.  Almost guaranteeing an announcement that B2B is about to become an Ironman & 70.3 race.

The points about the 2 transitions and the hills are true and relevant. However I would say that if Raleigh fits really well with your plans (schedule, geography, etc.) I certainly wouldn't avoid it as a first 70.3. There are hundreds and maybe even thousands of people who do it every year for their first.

Japarker and d00d are right that White Lake would be a very good alternative. It's just a very different type of experience... small, informal... and in many ways better, but just a different animal from the hoopla and production you're going to get a big Ironman brand race like Raleigh. Depends on what you want.

While this won't be my first 70.3, I too was interested in the hills.
But the coolness of japarker and others on the other board allayed my fears.

Turns out 10 of my teammates are doing the race as well !

We're just weeks out from Raleigh. Again looking like the wetsuit temp will be a toss up until race day. I'm headed out for my first 70.3

Where you at? Let's do this!
