Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 171/248
Pre-race routine:

rode down to setup transition. got there at 4:15 am. setup. sat on the steps near the swim course for 2 hours. ate oatmeal at 3:30 am, banana at 6:30 am, gatorade and water until 7:30, gu at 7:45. went to the bathroom 2x before the race. I was well hydrated. it was chilly and drizzling while waiting for the start. my family came down around 7.
Event warmup:

not much - watched the swimmers.
Swim
  • 36m 44s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

first 1/4 was terrible. once I rounded the bouy the last 3/4 I got into a breathing pattern. I could deal with the people (more spread out now). There was a current coming from the north which did speed up the first part and slowed down the last 3/4 of the swim. I took about 2 big gulps of water when trying to breathe; I got caught sucking in a wave. the wall helped navigation. I spotted a lot and then didn't spot for a while. I did zig-zag a bit. I saw Rose and Charlie walking along the wall so I stopped to wave one time. Good distraction. A mile is a long time to swim straight.
What would you do differently?:

More open water practice. Position myself in the very front line. I don't know how else to avoid the crowd.
Transition 1
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

Stopped short to look for my bike. Kimberly was right behind me and reminded me to go down further. easy transition. no wetsuit to take off. paused briefly to clip into pedals once I got outside of the transition. I jogged in and out of the transition. Other people ran but I was working on slowing my breathing and remembering the details. Jogging worked just fine.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 27m 54s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.96 mile/hr
Comments:

good ride. not as scary as I thought it would be. I was able to navigate around water bottles and pot holes just fine. No flats - THANK GOD! I drank about 3/4 of my water and had 2 gu's (at approx. 10 min and 1 hour). I could have pushed harder but I was pushing it much more than normal. I tried to keep the speed well over 15 mph and the cadence above 90. I feel I did well with that. the speed did drop to 12 or 13 at the over passes. My butt got sore. I stretched a number of times. I pedaled 98% of the time. right foot did fall asleep.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder. Get cleats adjusted.
Transition 2
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

easy, change shoes, put on belt, dump empty gu packs.
What would you do differently?:

almost forgot to leave my helmet.
Run
  • 1h 09m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I *kinda* needed to pee but held off. stomach was bothered by (potentally) too much gatorade. did get a water cramp for a few minutes. I started the run slow and then kept it steady the entire time. only stopped to sip water. I dumped water on my head at almost every stop. my face felt very red and hot unless the wind was blowing. left knee and ball of right foot were bothered (near the end) but was able to deal. I was totally inspired by the people with 1 or no legs. How could I stop when these people are overcoming some incredible odds? Sprinted like mad at the end! Heard my name announced at the finish - very cool touch!
What would you do differently?:

more training. faster 10k pace. push myself harder. continue with pt at home and investigate the ball of foot issue.
Post race
Warm down:

walk, banana, water, water, water. Talked to folks. They brought roses :) . Then stretched, water, 1.5 beers (mic ultra - yuck). It became sunny, chilled and listened to a band with Kimberly. Walked to transition and biked home, very slowly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to train better on the run and bike. Need to learn to swim in a crowd.

Event comments:

Very fun! Great cheering section. I mentally stayed positive and held my joking tone. "Dear Lord baby Jesus, please don't let me get a flat!" I am proud of myself for accomplishing this. I am convinced I would like to do another. It was worth the hard work!

I'm trying my best to read everyone's Chicago Race Reports, since I did the race too, and they never get dull!! Very nice and detailed report.

I might have been hanging out on the very same stairs with you at 5 in the morning? I hung out there with my wife for a while. I cannot remember how long we stayed. Did you see us? ha!

You definitely kicked butt on your swim! Yes, the first 1/4 of the swim was a breeze; it actually caught me by surprise that I finished that first part so quickly, but, yes, it was a different story going north; ughhh!!!

I can totally relate with you about getting a flat. Before my first triathlon in June (Batavia)...I literally had 4 or 5 flats on consecutive bike rides. I was getting quite skllled at fixing flats, but didn't want that to happen during a race. Turned out I needed new tires and I got the "Hard Case" by Bontrager...since then, nothing even close to a flat!! If you want some piece of mind; I would highly recommend those. The LBS guy told me that they have "kevlar" in them and that is a bullet-proof material. They cost a bit more, but they have paid for themselves already in saved aggravation and frustrating flats on some of my long bike rides. BTW, I am not an employee of the company...ha!!

That was nice that your friend, Kimberly, was behind you to guide you through the T1 area. That is my biggest regret of the Chi-Tri...My t1 time was atrocious!!! 6 minutes!! I got totally lost. Great T1 time!!

Good job on the bike too! I took some advice I got from another triathlete about hills (overpasses in Chicago) and he told me that I should approach the hills with a LOT of SPEED. I practiced it a lot in training, but it really does help with getting up a hill. Your momentum almost gets you half way up the hill with little effort; then get into a lower gear, stand up and hammer it up the hills. I did that a few times, but I also did the same as you and had to stretch out the butt muscles a little bit...

Did you happen to find the walk from the finish to the T1 area the hardest part of the day also? it seemed like the longest walk ever! This sounds pathetic, but the medal they gave me actually felt a little heavy after that long walk...weird...

Very funny about the "Dear Lord Baby Jesus..." thing...Did you happen to listen to the "Jerky Boys"?? I think one of the characters from that group used to say that all the time.

Great report and great race!!! That was very nice that you had such a great support group.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't realize that anything was posted. I am glad you had a good race and thanks for reading my log. I heard about the "bullet proof" tires I think I will invest in those. This tri thing is one big learning experince and I am enjoying it a ton.
