Total Time = 5h 28m 35s
Overall Rank = 329/
Age Group = 30 - 34
Age Group Rank = 43/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4AM and ate my almond butter and banana sandwich and a banana. Also was sipping on a bottle of Nuun to get some electrolytes. I definitely need to bring warmer clothes if I do this race again. It was freezing cold in the morning and I only had a light long sleeve on with a pair of basketball shorts over my tri shorts. A full on sweatsuit with a jacket would have been more appropriate. Good thing the buses to the startline was packed and there was plenty of body heat.
Event warmup:

I was one of the last heats to go which is good and bad. I got to warm up and watch a lot of other people start but by the time we finally got in the water I was annoyed I had to wait so long. I did a few active stretches and tried to stay calm before the race. Took a salt tab about 20 mins before my wave and also ate a Gu gel.
Swim
  • 35h 37m
  • 2112 yards
  • 1h 41m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water temp was perfect and given this was my 1st HIM I knew I had a long day ahead of me and didn't want to push it. Overall I was happy with my pace but next time I will try and go faster. There were a lot of people in the water and because we were one of the last waves, I had to maneuver around all the folks taking a leisurely swim.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster
Transition 1
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

Used a wetsuit stripper which was fantastic and ran to my bike. I decided to run with my shoes on which might have cost me some time but probably saved me some embarrassment.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 2h 55m 27s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.15 mile/hr
Comments:

I found the course hilly but fun. There was great scenery and I found myself passing a lot of people. I was happy I brought waffles, jelly beans and salt tabs as I was definitely hungry and I ate most of what I brought. I refilled with water and Gatorade once but I didn't drink as much as I should have.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more
Transition 2
  • 03m 28s
Comments:

Legs felt like Jello and was happy to be done with the bike leg
Run
  • 1h 50m 6s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was a 3 loop course with 1 decent hill. The support crews were unreal and with all the people out cheering everyone on, I didn't have it in me to stop and walk. I pushed too hard in the 1st lap which led me to cramp and slow down quite a bit on laps 2 and 3 but overall I was happy with my run. I was able to finish strong and seeing my wife and baby at the finish line was the best feeling in the world!
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretch, ate some food and hit the road!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I learnt a lot from this race which I look forward to carrying into my next HIM. I also bought a tri bike which I'm hoping will help me ride faster.

Event comments:

I give this race a 9 out of 10. Other than the run course which became repetitive, the volunteers, crowd, organization and everything else was fantastic. I will definitely do this race again and highly recommend it for anyone looking at HIM races in TX!

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
