Subject: Wearing a Fleece during bike leg?
I'm doing my first HIM in 2weeks and it starts at 7 am. It will probably be cold on the bike so should I wear a fleece to get warmer after the swim? Do people do that? I could unzip it and throw it to a family member when I'll be warm enough (it's a 4K ring - doing 20 times).

What so you think??? Thanks.

Whatever you need to be comfortable.  I can't imagine shivering for part of a HIM bike would be a good thing.

A 4K ring 20 times?!?!  What, is this a crit/HIM combo?  That'd sure be interesting to see...

It's a 4.4Km loop to be exact... Here is the link: http://www.esprittriathlon.com/en/raceDemi_course.htm

I did the Olympic 2 times but it was only 9 loops... 20 will definitely be more challenging!!!

Personally, I wouldn't. At my last HIM in June, it was about 55 degrees at the start. The water was warmer than the air. I was working hard enough, however, that I really wasn't very cold (except for my feet, which I couldn't feel at the end of the bike!)

If you are working hard, you'll generate enough body heat to keep yourself warm.

Might want to be careful about the idea of leaving the fleece with family if you do it, though. USAT has a rule forbidding "abandonment of equipment" and this would qualify. If you take it on course with you, you have to bring it back unless the race provides a drop off spot, but that's usually just a bottle exchange on a HIM.

I would suggest ARM WARMERS... That way when it warms up you can take them off and stuff them in your back pocket...

Depends. How cold is cold?

You could always go with a long-sleeve technical shirt - keeps the warmth in without the sweats.

I would take the fleece for a test-ride before deciding that's the way to go.

I wore a windbreaker on the bike in my first sprint - it was still kinda chilly when we hit the bikes and it was perfect.  Looked a little goofy, but I felt good.

The current water temperature in Montreal is 24C/76F and the air temperature is 20C/72F.  You should not be needing a fleece or any kind of windbreaker in that kind of weather.   However, why take a chance?  Do bring your fleece and/or rain proof  windbreaker in case of  rain or a sudden drop in temperature.  The worse that can happen is that it will be too warm in which case you need only take any excess garment off.  It beats being cold and not having adequate attire!

Oh, and have a great HIM.  You'll love Montreal.  I was there Sunday and Monday in the old port section where the race is happening and I had a great time.
