Elizabethtown Dolphins Sprint Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 27m 16s
Overall Rank = 70/
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 16/17
Pre-race routine:

First triathlon of my life, so I just showed up, set up transition, and tried to keep my nerves down.
Event warmup:

Was able to get a warm up swim in the 50 meter pool. Did one lap and called it a morning.
Swim
  • 09m 39s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first swim in a 50 meter pool, as well as in a race, so I was happy to get through with no huge mistakes. The nerves of race day seemed to gas me out shortly after starting, so I learned a bit from that. The lanes got a bit crowded, and I was proud of the way I navigated the bodies.
What would you do differently?:

More swim practice, try and keep my pace and heart rate and nerves down at the beginning.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

Pretty straight forward transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 47m 31s
  • 13 miles
  • 16.42 mile/hr
Comments:

I am not a strong cyclist, and this was a hilly course. Took me a while to get my breathing and heart rate down. Not real comfortable drinking on the bike, so that didn't help.
What would you do differently?:

More miles and saddle time needed.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

I felt like this was a pretty quick transition. Just learning as I go.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 27m 6s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I was gassed for this run, but I pushed through. At this point it was all about finishing without stopping and learning.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walking around the lot, drinking and eating.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience. More bike fitness would have lent to a stronger run.

Event comments:

This race is in my hometown at a place I used to hang out as a kid, so it's close to my heart. I really enjoyed the distances as a first triathlon, and everyone helping out was helpful. The swim start was a bit confusing, because the guys I stood in line next to had listed swim times several minutes slower than me, so I wondered how I was put near the back. Overall everything ran smoothly and I was happy to have been there.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
