How spectator friendly/unfriendly is IM NC 140.6? Considering signing up for it, but the two transitions plus different start and finish swim locations and shuttles only seems it would be difficult for my wife.

I haven't done this race, but I live in NC and will be signing up for the 2017 race. Logistically, I'm guessing my wife won't go to the swim start. She can see me at T1 and then have plenty of time to see me before I get back to T2. After that, I'm pretty sure there are a few places you could see a loved one along the run course.

I'm doing Augusta in Sept. One transition, but a walk/shuttle to swim start there, also (1.2mi...if I had to guess ). It's not going to bother me much if she isn't at the swim start. She may feel differently. If so, we'll re-think this.

Assuming they have it set up the same way as B2B, I would say not very. T1, which is where you catch the shuttle to the start line is on Wrightsville beach with one bridge on and off the island. So leaving after seeing you in T1 could be a pretty big pain. T2 and the finish area are in downtown Wilmington and my sister in law had a heck of a time getting to it. She wasn't able to get there until about 1 1/2 hrs after I finished (I did the half). It took her hours to get into the downtown area.

My recommendation would be to have anyone who wants to watch you just go directly to the finish/T2 area and watch from there. I believe the run is two loops so they could see you come in from the bike, then see you leave the run, at loop 1, and then finish. There is a lot to do in downtown Wilmington so they won't be bored, that's for sure.

I did B2B in 2014.

Swim is point-to-point.  I took the shuttle while my sherpa got there on her own.  She was able to see me start the swim (or at least wish me well as I walked towards the start) and make it to T1 before I got there (48 minutes with the current).  If your sherpa can readily pick your neoprene clad body out of the sea of neoprene clad bodies...good for them.  A nice alternative would be to walk to where the half started to watch swimmers go by, but then they risk missing you at T1.  It's hard to judge swim times with the current.  I would have been long gone if someone had waited for me at my typical 1:10 swim time.

Bike is a single large loop.  Don't expect to get from T1 to any point on the bike as most of the available routes are blocked for the race.  Best bet is to head from T1 to downtown and hang out there for the day.  It wouldn't be easy to get from the bike course to T2 as those routes are also blocked...

Run is two loop out-n-back.  There are 4 opportunities for someone to see you on the run.  In the first mile, in mile 12-13, in mile 13-14, and at the finish.

Now...there may be additional strategies for a highly mobile spectator (say...someone on a bicycle).  Park downtown, ride to T1 and on to the swim start.  Ride back to T1.  Then ride back downtown.  On the run, they could ride out to watch from various locations on the run and still be back at the finish line.

Finish line wasn't as crowded as typical M-dot races.  Finish area was easier for spectators to navigate and meet up after the race.

I have done the half once and full twice.  Each time my husband was able to see me get out of the water and head out on the bike.  Well, not literally get out of the water but see head in and out of T1.  We stayed downtown and I took the athlete's shuttle to T1.  He drove down to Wrightsville closer to the time.  The bike is not spectator friendly.  I saw him multiple times on the run -- heading into T2, heading out of T2, turnaround, etc.

Great spectator advice everyone. I plan to do the 2017 race as my first 140.6 and will be bringing my SO. Does anyone know how quickly 2016 sold out? I plan to be ready and waiting for 2017 registration.

The full sold out in May.  The half earlier.

According to the IM website, there are still a couple spots open. However, if you are like me, plunking down the registration fee early makes my training for focused.

If you want to pay $1400+ to race, you may be able to enter.

General entry sold out months ago.

I didn't read all the replies to this post, but wanted to detail my experiences at the race formerly known as Beach2Battleship.

I've raced the 70.3 three times, and the 140.6 once. It's a fabulous race. Yes, there are some logistics you have to get through, but race officials have tried hard to make it as easy as possible, for everyone.

Does your wife plan to spend the entire day out on the course cheering you on? If not, you could probably just have her go with you to transition in the morning, hang out for the hour, or so, that it's going to take you to finish the swim, then go hang out at the hotel until your predicted finish time. At that time, she could hang out at the finish, watch triathletes cross the line, and take your pic as you cross the line.

That's how my family and I did it when I raced the full. It's a lot easier, especially with kids. They swam all day in the pool at the hotel, then played at the finish in the bounce houses until I came through.

Family members out on the course for the entire day are usually more tired than those crossing the line!

Augusta's swim start is like a party.  And it's only a couple blocks from the finish.  My wife and daughter went with me to swim start, then watched the swim from one of the bridges before walking to T1 to see me off on my bike.

You would know better than I......but.....

If it's a straight-shot swim.....how can it not be 1.2 mi. from swim start to T1? I admit to not knowing how far a city block is. Maybe it's 1/2 mi.
