Subject: Mary training, missed LSD - Can I recoup?
I was doing great on my 1st marathon training - up to 11mi - until the last weekend of July (16 weeks from Philly marathon), due to patella tendonitis. Missed two long runs and managed to run a few 4 milers here and there before the NYC 1/2 - All went surprisingly well.
Tthanks to PT, knees seem to be back to normal but I seemed to have lost my "mojo". Throw in some personal isssues and I lost another two long runs. YIKES!!!

I'm now 10 weeks from the marathon, I was supposed to do 14mi this past weekend and 16 this coming. I'd like to avoid pushing too hard and injury myself again if I try to pick up the schedule as if I never missed a run. Trying to ease in is a strategy I'm trying to figure out but not sure how.

Can someone help me with this? Or should I just be a bit more patient, miss my goal of doing a mary this year and pick up for next year? (something I REALLY don't want to do)
I managed to miss two long runs then do a 1/2. Can I do 13, then two weeks later do 15 and continue upping the mileage from there? I know we're all different but I just need someone to talk to me for some encouragement or "better judgement advice".

Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately there is no such thing as "making up" a workout. If you miss it you miss it plain and simple. 10 weeks is plenty of time to adjust your training schedule. Do your 20 miler no less than 4 weeks out from race day. Basically you have 6 weeks to build up to 20 miles. Try doing LSD's of 10,12,14,16,18,20 over the next 6 weeks. Good luck!

I am in no way an expert on this, but I had to up my mileage in a hurry to get on plan for my first mary this December. I was worried about injury, so I've been running my LSD's slow and easy. I run for 2 miles then walk and hydrate for 1 minute. I plan to slowly decrease the walking time as my training progresses--that's the PLAN. We'll see how it really goes, but so far no injuries.

I guess I should mention that my goal is to complete, not compete my first mary.  Your goal for the race may somewhat dictate what you do.

It is not about an individual workout as it alone will give you less than 1% increase in fitness. It is about the accumulative effort of ALL the runs you've done. Missing one or two long runs is not going to kill you, but missing two full weeks of training will set you back a lot.

That being said, if your goal is just to experience the pain that is a marathon and the thrill of a finish, then you should be fine. If you're going for a BQ???? Then I'd worry about missing repeated workouts.

Doing a 13 and then a 15 or longer wouldn't be a bad approach to get back on schedule.
