Pre-race routine:

Recovering from probable broken little toe on left foot 3 weeks before the race (didn't waste the time and money going to the doctor for x-ray, but it appeared to be broken). Did what I could (stationary bike, then elliptical and swim) to maintain fitness until I could get back into a running shoe and run. Targeted a 1 hour run with my club two days before the race as the yes/no decision point on doing the race. That run went well, so I showed up at Malibu Creek S.P. for this venerable trail race with about 3000' of climbing in 15 miles.

First ever race at 25K distance and first opportunity to actually compete this year after injuries prior to Firecracker 10K, Boston and Big Sur Marathons, and the Semper Tri sprint (which I had to DNS due to the toe injury).
Event warmup:

A lot of walking from car to race start area...took it easy on the injured toe.

Comments:

I'd run this loop twice in "preview" runs over the past two months, so I knew about what my time would be. Only wild card was the injured toe. Didn't bother me until after 8 miles (where the course generally descended).
What would you do differently?:

Not break my toe 3 weeks out. Fortunately, that allowed enough time to heal sufficiently to race. I was very well trained for this race, though, at the time of the injury.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Ate post-race food (tried not to overdo it). Cheered in teammates in both the 25K and the 50K.

Went to my car to get some stuff afterwards and blew off the awards...thought based on previous years' results that I was out of the running in my AG. Came back to the finish area to find out I was 2nd in my 10-year AG (50-59)...and actually 2nd among all over-50 finishers. And top 30 (26th) overall, despite the injury.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much really. I was a bit cautious on the technical descents to protect my toe from hurting too much.

Event comments:

Although the Bulldog event (now in its 25th year) is known for the 50K race, the 25K is no joke. A lot of long steep climbs (and technical descents) in Southern California summer weather.
