Pre-race routine:

Me and John left Dallas around 4:30am and drove to the race site. Saw some friend who were running at packet pickup. Had a bottle of Hyper Skratch I drank about a half hour from race start. This is a brutal course.
Event warmup:

Not much. Walked around a little and then went to the start line.
Run
  • 3h 08m 40s
  • 13.47 miles
  • 14m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

The first half of the run went well. I was conservative knowing the hardest part was in back half. It started getting very hot by the time I hit the beast on the crown. The beast is so steep you really have to use both hands and feet to climb. My quads were really trashed. More so than last year. I gashed a toe two weeks ago so I didn't get much training in for September. The race was taken over by a new company. The trails were loosely groomed in sections and the trail markings were terrible. I added another mile or so to the race because I missed a turn. I was not the only one. I ran into people all day who were lost.
What would you do differently?:

Hills and more hills. Needed more trail miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my camping chair under a tree and sat down. Took a shower and then headed out. No post race food or drinks were supplied.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of trail training and any training at all leading up to the race due to injury.

Event comments:

I have a love hate relationship with this race. It's hot and very difficult. Every year I swear off of it but come back. With the new race owners, I may be more inclined to skip. It was not managed well at all.

Course: The Rusty Crown is in the middle of the course. It's about 3 miles to the crown. You go up and down one side and then exit to the bowl on another mesa. After the aid station in the bowl it's back to another 10-13 climbs up and down the crown before exiting to the relatively flat land back to the finish.

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
