Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5. Ate a bagel with peanut butter and honey. Drank coconut water. Head to bus pickup.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 32m 19s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water temp to high for wetsuits. 1st time that has happened. 1st 200 yard was very crowded then it thinned out. There was a lot of seaweed. I kept having to pull it off me. Hard to sight when I was looking at the morning sun. I'm not a fast swimmer so I was pleased with my time.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder
Transition 1
  • 05m 18s
Comments:

Long run from swim to bike
What would you do differently?:

Pratice
Bike
  • 2h 55m 10s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Had to change course because of bridge construction which add 600 feet or so of elevation. Some of the road where in rough condition. On 2 or 3 down hills had 90 degree turns and then I was headed up hill...losing all momentum. Water stops were fine. Only needed the second one.
What would you do differently?:

Need more power
Transition 2
  • 04m 55s
Comments:

Back was a little stiff. Had to sit down and change shoes.
Run
  • 2h 06m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Course was flat. It was just VERY HOT - 90+. Water stations were good spots. Missed a couple of mile markers. Walked the water stops and poured water on me at every one.
What would you do differently?:

Run more in the heat
Post race
Warm down:

Massage, pizza, water and coke

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat

Event comments:

No time clocks on race course except for finish line. I didn't wear a watch so had no clue of my times. Was lucky I PRed. Very tight in transition area. Would be nice to spread us out but I don't think that would be possible. Bike course had too many turns causing a lot of lost momentum.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
