Run
Comments: Ran to my plan, based on training. Know the course extremely well (although this was a new version of the No Name course), so was able to anticipate where I needed to have energy in reserve. 30K and 15K started together...about 10 runners went out well ahead of me, but I assumed (correctly) that most were in the 15K. Three guys passed me in the relative flats around 2.5 miles in, but I had a hunch (also correct) that I'd see them again. Passed the first two on the big climbs between mile 4 and 6...one of them caught me for all of about 5 seconds at the end of the first loop, but I dropped him after that. Out of the aid station at the end of the first loop, I knew I was in 4th overall and 3rd male. Knew that I'd make up some ground on climbs and I'd noticed that the guy in 3rd had no hydration...and there were no aid stations on the 2nd loop. He hung on for awhile, but as I neared the turnaround at the north end of the 2nd loop, I could see I was gaining on him...pretty fast...he was cooked. Passed him just before the turnaround and that was that. Nobody else was close behind him and the way he was struggling, I knew I had 3rd in the bag (and I did). Both calves were tying up the last 4 miles, so I had to be careful of that on the big climbs the last 2.25 miles, but generally I cruised comfortably after the turnaround. What would you do differently?: Nothing...really terrific race and hit every goal: Top 3 overall, 1st over 50 (actually ended up first over 40), and sub-3 hours. Post race
Warm down: Grazed at the really good postrace spread (which doubled as an aid station). Walked and did some hip extensions. Apparently for finishing among the top 3 men, I won a pair of Oofos clogs. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing, other than being careful with cramping calves the last 4 miles. Event comments: Epitome of a "grass roots" trail race. This was my first time doing the 30K after doing the 50K the first year (2014) as my first attempt at that distance. Not a ton of amenities by the race director does what she can with her budget. Finally healthy after a succession of injuries over the last 15 months. Had a really good stretch of specific training for this, interrupted for about 3 weeks by broken left pinky toe at beginning of August. Based on a recent 19.2 mile training run in the mountains, I was confident of going under 3 hours for this and equaling my top 3 overall finish in the 50K race at this event two years ago.
Decided to walk the 1.25 miles from my car to the start. Felt good, so that built a bit of confidence. Otherwise just hit the restroom and stayed warm. A few striders before the start to loosen up.
