Pre-race routine:

Woke up way too early. Got to race venue 1hr before organizers showed up. I could have used the extra hour of sleep. First time being marked for a tri. Race# was 677. Met a guy in the parking lot looked like he was in his 50's had been doing Tri's for 18 years & had done IM Kona. He was super helpful & helped keep my head from getting the best of me & freaking myself out; very relaxed we set up transition area next to each other. Did a good sheparding a newbie thru the details of my first tri I couldn't thank him enough.
Swim
  • 43m 52s
  • 1760 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

lack of water clarity messed up my breathing. I normally take a few strokes & breath but I ended up breathing every stroke to keep on course 7 keep from looking into total darkness. Turning my head so much made me dizzy when I got to t1
What would you do differently?:

get a little more open water practice

Comments:

drank too much toward end of ride to hydrate for the run(overly cautious/nervouse about bonking on run). Used one of my sports drinks that just did not agree with me. Too sugary fruit punch. Will use HEED more next time as taste not overwhelming
Transition 2

Comments:

What would you do differently?:

practice a little more trail running. Leave my shirt at transition & just use race# belt
Post race
Event comments:

Ok first race. I would have given my right arm to be running on hard hot asphalt when I was slogging thru the sand. Water temp came as a surprise to me(can you say shrinkage everyone). I didn't expect it to be as warm as the pool but I thought it would be a little warmer than what it was.

Course: Wooded run thru dirt paths & sand. First 3 and a half miles felt too good to be true & they were. Had to do 2 laps of a section of the loop which had more sandy stretches which bogged me down/killed me. Had to run walk that section got to the mark for final mile which was less sandy & did fine the last mile after having a gel & some water.

Great job on your first tri....doing an oly for number 1.  That's awesome! Pretty cool you met a guy who had done Kona to give you some pointers.  Congrats Triathlete!
