Hey Everyone...looking for some tips/ideas/guidance here.

In 2015 i did two Ironmans. When 2016 came, I made it a point to re-focus on my career and get a job that would bring new challenges and skills. The job I had in 2015 was perfect for training, but it was not very enjoyable. I also spent 2016 taking a break from triathlon...was just burned out from all the training in 2015.

Now that we are in 2017, I am still finding it hard to get going. I will be lucky if i get in 20 miles on my bike in a week (1 ride). I run 2-3 times..about 4-5 miles each time and my swims are usually always 2000-2200. I find myself doing all 3 disciplines moreso to stay in shape vs. with a goal race/time in mind.

With that said, what have others here done when you have no desire to do a race? What types of goals do you set for yourself that are not races themselves? I am looking to get that drive back and right now it has proven to be difficult. And I dont just want to stop everything and risk starting completely over once I get the itch to do something long again.

I'm in the "taking a break" mode too.

Focusing on cycling mainly but also getting in run miles.

For now going for single sport events, mostly for fun. I signed up for a trail run so far, but nothing else yet.
I might do some cycling events I've had my eye on

Other options within the parameters of swim bike run

Fat bike
Cyclocross
Road Bike
Adventure runs
Train for explore
Run trails
Etc.

Don't have a performance standard to meet, just do it for the love of the sport.

What I find with people that "get burned out" is they did the sport for a performance standard, not because they loved to swim, bike, run. Once that standard became more challenging, or they didn't have the desire to put the work in beyond the "low hanging fruit" they were gone.

Which side are you on?

I signed up for a 12 hour and a 24 hour run. Still endurance based but the goal has more to do with time on my feet rather than distance covered. It will provide a good challenge to keep me motivated but doesn't quite have the same logistics that training for a triathlon requires.

I got into some trail ultras, and am right now also trying to qualify for the boston marathon.

Did a 50 mile and 50k on back to back days in Squamish, BC, beautiful coastal rainforest trails, 19,000 feet of elevation gain over the weekend, with the goal to SURVIVE it.

I felt more accomplished at that finish line than an ironman finish line.

Beat me up way more too.

How about volunteering at or putting on an event or two yourself?

Kudos on the Squamish 50/50. That's a bucket list race for me someday. Gary Robbins puts on one hell of a race!

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.
