Pula, Bjelovarsko-Bilogorska
Ironman Pula 70.3
65F / 18C
Total Time = 5h 12m 46s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 47/226
  • 44m 27s
  • 1900 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters

Very difficult swim. Large rolling waves and current throughout the course. Many people swam off course or long.

What would you do differently?:

If the race would have started at 7am instead of 10am the swim would have been flat.
Transition 1
  • 05m 44s

This was a large and long transition area plus the run from the beach. I expected a 5min transition.
  • 2h 48m 53s
  • 90 kms
  • 31.97 km/hr

The bike was more wet than than the swim. I've never ridden in rain that hard for that long.
What would you do differently?:

Based on the conditions, I was still on my expected pace. Dry conditions and a little bike tuning would have allowed a faster pace.
Transition 2
  • 03m 40s
  • 1h 30m 4s
  • 21 kms
  • 04m 17s  min/km

The rain continued into the run course. There were flash flood conditions on some of the roads and I was running in 4 to 6 inches of water. It was actually quite fun.

What would you do differently?:

My target was <90min for this run, so coming in at 1:30:04 I don't have anything to complain about.

I don't think the rain/water slowed me down. When the rain did stop it immediately started to get humid and heavy. The rain may have been a good thing!
Post race
Warm down:

A mile+ of walking back to our accomodations

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rough swim course
Rain on the bike
Had an issue with my bike fork that couldn't be corrected before the race.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

I thought of all the times I didn’t attempt something I wanted to do because I was too afraid of trying something new or of failing completely.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
