Hey all. I'm two years out from "serious" marathon training (life & stuff... you know). But now I'm back. To keep things simple, I have in the past trained by setting weekly mileage goals. Starting this month, for example, I plan on running 30/week, 40/miles the following month, and so on... capping out at 70/week a month out of the marathon. Of course, mostly slow & rarely fast.

I've PR'd twice on this "training method" (sub 3:30's). But I ain't getting any younger. Wonder if the BT'rs see something wrong w/my approach.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

How many miles have you been running prior weeks leading up to this? I can’t see a problem with it as long as you have a solid base, especially if you’ve done it before.

I agree. 30 miles a week is an ambitious starting point unless you've been running close to that for a while; otherwise, that seems like a reasonable plan.

That plan will "get it done", but if you want to get faster, you need focus.
I published a plan on google docs that you train by pace - includes by times and some by distance. So, it's not totally about volume. I usually get around 50 miles in the highest week and without much modifications due to life constraints, I can hit a 3:30 with it.

Runners World did a study about 12 years ago on Marathon Runners who qualified for the USA Olympic trials. The compared training plans of over 300 eleit marathon runners looking for patterns in the training of successful marathon runners. The found that some did over 100 miles a week and some did less than 40 miles a week. Some did 7 weeks or shorter training plans and some did 7 month or longer training plans. Some did 20 mile plus long runs will others didn’t do training runs over 12 miles long. So....there are many ways to train that will make you a successful marathon runner. The article concluded that every program had some type of speed work, some type of tempo run, and some type of long run. The listed those as the three key workouts for. Hiring you potentially in a marathon. Having run some marathons myself I feel that if you don’t have time to do everything that is recommended that the long runs are going to do lot more for you race than anything else. 80% slow miles and 20% fast miles is what most recommend. At 70 miles in you peak week you should do well in a marathon. My only tips would be take a full day rest every week and taper for 10-20 days before you race.
