Does anyone have any experience with disc wheel covers?  I don't have the coin for really deep rims nor full on disc wheels.  I've got a Felt B12, that is pretty quick.  I know that upgrading the engine is going to be one of the biggest things I can do to improve my times, but I feel like I've heard that wheel covers are pretty good extra aero/dollar.  Any thoughts?

I made my own covers years ago using this thread as my guide:

Today ABS sheets can be found cheaper than what I could find back then.  Here's an example on eBay for two 24" x 0.040" sheets for a total of $31.  Follow the guide and its pretty easy to do.

Here's what my old Felt TTR wheel looked like with it on:

Interesting.  I may look into this.

Had you used them previously, or is this something you've just purchased?

I’ve never used them, but they seem highly recommended on other sites and it fits good. We’ll see how it does.

I got one about a year ago to put on my back up bike. I got it from wheelbuilders. It went right on without a problem. Has not been a problem. Since I don't have a "lab" to test it out, it's hard to say how much it helps. In previous experience it seemed I got maybe 1/2 mph improvement. Where it appears to work the best is when there was a slight crosswind. You could sort of lean into the wind and get a sail like effect.

I hadn't ridden that old bike in quite awhile. I think you inspired me to take it out. It has a 56 chain ring and an 11 cog in the back. It was pretty windy today. Here's a strava segment I rode today. Not sure what role the aero cover played or if it was just the gearing.

I suspect tail wind had a bit to do with that :-)

You can tell by the fact Strava says you would have to do 962 watts for 7m41 to do that time.
Three ways of doing that a)motor b) tailwind c) asthma medication :-)

Joiking apart there are wind angles were a disc cover provides phenomenal advantage. Other than a bit of weight there is no disadvantage.

Yea, I did leave out a little detail. Like how strong the wind was. None the less the wheel did hold together well. I rode about 4pm.
