Swim
Comments: Overall, the swim was great! I sighted well and managed to say calm the entire time--no panicking this year!!! Sighting was awesome--I don't think I swim that straight in the pool sometimes! Managed to go with the flow of the rough water, but I think this is my fastest OWS race split ever. What would you do differently?: pull a little harder--I think there was something left out on the course, but at the time I was feeling really, really good. Transition 1
Comments: LONG run up from the beach to the transition area. I had to take some extra time to rinse off feet really well, given the sandy beach. I knew this would be a long one. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: I only previewed the sprint bike course, for some unknown reason! I wasn't thinking and turned around at the sprint turn around. That left me unprepared for the hills that were coming during the second half of the way out! That was okay, they were all mostly small, but there was a serious headwind for most of the second half of the course out. Big, giant M-fing hill right before transition that had no downhill lead in. BUT...I managed it! Ran out of gatorade about 5 miles out--nothing to drink. I was very thirsty for something other than sugar too. Gu every 20min (except last 20' mark--just didn't have the time with the hills) What would you do differently?: Push a little harder on the flats? Get another water bottle for the handlebars with just plain water. Transition 2
Comments: Overall, pretty good T2. Almost ran over the guy in front of me on the bike course, as he stopped WAY before the dismount line, but I avoided that collision. Changed socks, since feet were pretty wet from the bike course. I could see wet footprints on the ground. What would you do differently?: Have some plain water in T2 for my drinking pleasure. Run
Comments: Started with 3':90" run/walk intervals and kept that until the first aid station (1.5mi). Then I realized my stomach was not happy AND that I was walking just as fast as my run pace, so I ended up walking until mile 6. Splits were all sub 14:30 based on garmin data. Gu every 30 min What would you do differently?: Not sure, because the walking was largely based on how gross my stomach felt. But, I needed to drink that much on the bike to stay hydrated and fed. Post race
Warm down: Not much warm down. I stretched a little. Drank some water and ate cookies and fritos. About 45' after the race I ate a piece of Dominos pizza, which I regretted immediately. What limited your ability to perform faster: gut issues on the run (but probably not all that much) Event comments: This is a fun race. There were some issues this year with the new race course, which ended up causing a major backup with the awards. Weather the day before caused issues on the swim course with the buoys being blown off course so they had to be reset (causing delay in start time). Last updated: 2018-09-10 12:00 AM

set up transition and then had pedals checked at bike support I had a dream that they were loose and fell off during the race. They were loose, so that was good. Then, I sat on the bed of my truck for a while watching bike porn. Rode bike a little to make sure everything was okay. Had 1.5 bagels with peanut butter and coffee for breakfast. Had 1/2 a packet of breakfast biscuits at race site with water. Then gu 30 before race.
Swam about 400yds in the water. Then bounced around in the water to keep warm, instead of getting out and standing on the beach in the wind.
