Subject: Drafting?! In a triathlon? Really?!
Happy Friday all!

Interested in what other posters thoughts are on draft-legal races. I have a tri this weekend and to my shock I've discovered it's draft legal. I didn't even know this was possible. Sorry but surely this belongs in Tour de France etc? Personally I'd gain no satisfaction from getting a good bike time through this means nor would I want some random capitalising on my hard pedalling work. -pinch of salt intended with this post

Are you planning on riding a road bike or tri (time trial bike)? If it is a draft legal race I would bet that you can't have aero bars. When it comes to draft legal races that is another type of race. Drafting in draft legal races is not gaining an unfair advantage it's utilizing a skill set to improve race performance. I envy you for having a draft legal race to enter. They are few and far between by me and I think they are really exciting and add a totally new dynamic to racing. I love watching short course and ITU races and would love to try it out sometime. So, just make sure you have the proper bike for the race and try to capitalize on racing with a pack. It could be a really exciting event.

Draft legal or not, follow the rules.

A draft-legal race isn't "bad" it just requires a different strategy.

I'll also add please fully disclose the situation if you brag on your performance.  There's a big difference between "I rode a 23 mph bike split" and "I rode a 23 mph bike split because I was allowed to draft."

Vote with your wallet. Don’t do the event next year.

I don’t have any issue with draft legal races. Variety is the spice of life.

Sounds exciting! Maybe you can stick with the FOP bikers. Just swim your off so you're with them.

Don't worry, you won't be able to keep up with the FOP bike riders anyway....which won't even be an issue if you are not a FOP swimmer...which will put you out of the race even if you are a FOP runner.

Honestly, about 75% of people who do triathlon won't even realize they are in a draft legal race.  Don't worry about it.

Or Olympic Triathlon. Or the ITU World Triathlon Series.

Draft-legal is nothing new. It's the way much of the world does Sprint, and sometimes Olympic, distance triathlon racing, even at the amateur level. The ITU amateur World Championship Sprint Triathlon is draft legal. It's probably harder than you think. If you think you're going to be able to latch onto a pack and easily ride at a nice, steady, 80% of FTP while the guys up front work harder to tow you along, you're wrong. Try it, and you'll likely be detached from the group after the first corner.

It's a triathlon, not a bike time trial. The bike split, alone, is irrelevant in either format. Even in non-draft triathlon, they don't give out medals in T2 for having a great ride. The bike leg is just part of a larger puzzle. Draft-legal just adds a bit more of an element of strategy.
