I'm a proud slow swimmer and would like to become a lot faster. I just started swimming again about 6 months ago, so just being able to swim at all right now is an accomplisment. But I went for my first OWS on Sunday and I felt terrible. I was the last one to finish but I least I finished and it was my first practice OWS. So nerves and fear got the best of me as well. But how do I become a faster swimmer, are there any tricks or am I just going to be a slow swimmer?

Tricks? No, there are no tricks. Swimming is 90% technique and 10% muscular endurance. The absolute best thing you can do is find a good swim coach and learn how to swim correctly. Here's a good place to start:

I second the advice to look into a Masters group.  Having the coached workout once a week certainly made a big difference for me and I hear that some Y's offer them more often than that.

I agree with all the above posts. You won't get better if you don't really know what's wrong with your technique. If you take some lessons or join a Masters, your coach or some faster swimmers may be able to point out what's wrong and then you can try to correct your form.
