Hour VO2 max bike this morning that was painful, but fun. Then, at noon, I went for a 35’ run with some strides thrown in. Weather was 65F with 45mph gusting winds. I’m pretty sure there were two sets of strides where I was pushed backwards by the wind mid-stride!!

Good job getting your workouts done Nicole and Gretchen.

Since the ramp test I've done a 60min trainer ride with 3 x 5min cruise intervals, a 55min run, with 4 x 5min cruise intervals. a 30 min easy peazy recovery ride. And snuck out at lunch today to test ride my race bike. After almost 4 years hanging on the wall, she's out of retirement and coming back into service for long/outdoor rides. Starting with a 4 hour pedal tomorrow morning.

All I've done is pumped up the tires, gave her a bit of a clean and tested everything is working. Heading off to a bike mechanic for a full birthday service is planned, but for now everything seems to be in working order.

The single speed looks very sad with all the racey bits (aero bars, clipless pedals etc.) taken off. But I am looking forward to being back on a proper bike.

Have a good weekend everyone.

90’ trail ride today. Weather is pretty nice, if cloudy and gloomy. Ended up cutting ride a little short. Had a flat/under inflated tire and I think I rode like 5 miles before I realized what was going on (oops!). Once I figured out I needed air, I was 10 miles from the truck (and my pump!). I used my CO2 cartridges to inflate the tire fully and then rode back to car, stopping periodically to check pressure and add air...except, I ran out of cartridges. I blew the first one not remembering how my adapter works. The second one worked and didn’t take a whole lot of air to fill the tire, so I saved it and topped off later. Good thing! 10 miles back to the car would have SUCKED!! Maybe I should unearth my frame pump for this bike, just in case.

Hour long run in gross, chilly, cloudy, misty conditions. It was actually a really good run in terms of the run, but man did it suck to be outside.

When, in many years, I am on my deathbed, I will get up and run hill repeats. That way, the last 15” of my life will seem like an eternity and after I’m done, I’ll want to die.

This morning’s hill repeat workout was tough. It seems amazing that of the hour workout, only two minutes were hard...everything else was walking or Z2 warmup/cool down. Nevertheless, I’m pooped! I’ve never done a hill repeat workout on the run. I’ll be interested to see how the day progresses from here.

On my death bed I will do burpees; 1 per minute of a rugby match I am watching on TV; this is clearly was a really clever idea, so much so I am contemplating handing in my degree certificate as I am obviously a fool and I now ache all over. And I did a 7 mile ride in between, and then a 5 mile ride today as again I am clever!

On the good news front, our rugby team beat the hockey team! We averaged 249 burpees per person and hockey averaging 140. I did a mere 124; with someone doing 740!!!!!!

Hello, all.  Been out of pocket the last couple of weeks working down in Hilton Head, SC.  I took my work at home equipment and set up shop in a condo down there and enjoyed the "salt life" for a little bit.  Weather was all over the place, as high as 82*F and then we had a day of winter with highs in the mid-50s.  I did a little training in the pool plus a bunch of walking, and played golf for the first time in four years.  The results were as expected.

I start my base training for 2021 next week.  I too will be torturing myself with a ramp test, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday.  I'm using Trainer Road's sweet spot base plan plus keeping up my strength training work.

@Andrew:  awesome on getting the smart trainer and into Zwift - it takes a little getting used to.  Let me know what worlds you like the best.  And great training, too.

@Gretchen:  your workouts are awesome, and I agree with you on hill repeats, running or biking

@Nicole: I've dealt with neck issues on and off for years, hopefully it will resolve itself and glad you got some outdoor time while the nice weather lasted

Hope everyone has a great weekend.  Go Ravens!!

Big weekend for me, capping off a big week.

4 hour ride (first proper ride on the race bike in 3 1/2 years) followed by 30 minute brick run Saturday. 2 hour run Sunday. And my mate piked on me for both days... disappointing.

Overall for the week,

S: None. Disappointing
B: x5, (4 x Zwift), 7hr 13 min
R: x4, 4hr 5 min

Total of 11 hours 18 minutes.

Riding the race bike again was fun. She sure is a little twitchy compared to the single speed. But felt good. I've got a new pair of aero bars since I last rode it, and looking at the bike after the fact I think I need to move back slightly. The extensions look a long way forwards...

Looking forward to another good week.

I woke up this morning with a sore right shoulder (in the actual joint) and both trapezius muscles are sore (so all over the upper back, shoulders, and neck). The ONLY thing I can think is that it is from the hill repeats yesterday. Has anyone ever had shoulder/neck soreness from running hill repeats? My legs are a little sore too, but that’s to be expected.

Sappo—I have a friend doing a burpee-a-thon in the month of November. Her goal is to do 2000 burpees. That’s 67 a day. I’m dying just thinking about it! But, so far, she’s nailing 75-80 a day. She’s raising money for childhood brain cancer research, so I guess there is a strong motivation. I opted to write a check over taking up the challenge though!! :D

Kestrel Talon?  If so, that was on my short list when I bought my bike, mostly because of the flexible geometry.  Cool ride!

Yup, 2013 Kestrel Talon. A much faster bike than its rider.

Originally came with a full TT setup, but I converted to drop bars and clip ons when I was preparing for challenge wanaka, as I wanted a bit more control/feeling of security descending in the southern alps. Never changed it back as drops are much more social than a TT setup for riding with friends.

I am however thinking I'm going to convert back to full TT mode ahead of the coming season. A dream would be converting to electronic shifting, so I could have a TT and road set up and swap back and forwards as needed without having to recable everything.

I sometimes get a sore right shoulder/neck post run. Not specifically hill sessions, at least not that I've noticed.

But, I've always blamed the dog pulling too much on the leash, as its almost always on that side of my body.

legs should be sore after a hill session

Absolute sh!tshow of a ride this morning. I ended up bailing half way through my second 20’ threshold interval when I was struggling to hold 80%FTP (workout called for 100%). Win some, lose some.

Epic ramp test failure yesterday, just didn't have it.  I have my Trainer Road FTP set at 260 and I only came in at 233.  I realized there was no way I was going to get much further so I bailed probably a little before I hit total failure.

I'm so aggravated about it I'm going to hit it again on Saturday.

I squeezed in a fantastic hour run this afternoon in between baking pie and dinner. Beautiful warm day, rain has just let up—couldn’t have asked for a better comeback after yesterday’s terrible ride.

Gretchen and Mike, Sorry to hear about the disappointing rides. It happens.

40min easy run, 30 min zwift ride with 3x3min cruise intervals on Tuesday to start the week.
1000m swim, 60 min zwift ride with 4x5min cruise intervals on Wednesday

Unfortunately Mr 3 woke up this morning at 5am from a bad dream. Got him back to sleep, but I didn't want to re-wake a partially asleep 3 year old by getting ready for my run, and then leave him for the pregnant wife to deal with. So instead of a run this morning I'll ride this evening, and try for a run again tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating today!!

I did a “fun” little brick to get the day going. 1:15 on the bike as a VO2 max workout (10x2’@110%ftp), followed by a 45’ ez run. Let me tell you, it was not hard to do an easy run after that bike! Legs had no juice in them, but somehow managed to hit zone goals.

Rest day for me and I’m a little suspicious. Friday is normally either a rest or a long bike on the trail, depending on the weather. Then Saturday is a run/ride or just a ride, depending on Friday. Sunday is always long run day. Monday is always rest day. This week coach has rest on Friday, ride/run on Saturday totaling two hours (normal), and then rest on Sunday and Monday. Ummm...I’m a little concerned about Tuesday!

GretchenNice workouts as always. Have you found out what painful treat you have to look forwards to on Tuesday yet?

Mike, how did the re test ramp test go? Are we happy this time around?

Me, My running mate who doesn't do much cycling joined me on my long ride this weekend, I knew he wouldn't be as strong as me but thought that having a friend along to talk to would make for a more enjoyable ride. Anyway, he absolutely blew up his legs, which resulted in a pretty slow 'socially paced' ride for me, and cut short too. But still 3 hr 50 on the bike, so a decent chunk of time in the saddle. Made up for it on Sunday with a 2hr 15 min run. I really feel that I'm making progress with the running. I'm slow, that hasn't changed but my HR is nice and low and consistent (124 BPM for 2:15:00 running) and I am feeling like I could go all day at that effort, if I kept getting calories/water into me that is. Building that diesel engine.

For the week,
S: x 2, 2,000m, 47 min
B: x 4 (3 x zwift) 6hr 22 min
R: x 3, 3hr 52 min

Total of 11hr 1 minute for the week. Another solid week.

For the month (Monday is scheduled rest day, so I'm done for November)

S: 2hr 15
B: 23hr 20
R: 15hr 55

total of 41.5 hours SBR for the month.

How did everyone else do? For me, it was my 2nd 41 hour month in a row, so happy with how the consistency is going. December is going to be a smaller month tho as we are getting very close to our new arrival arriving. I've got 1 more big week scheduled, and then we're getting into baby territory. So not sure how training is going to go, other than a lot more flexibly than at the moment. I'm imagining a lot of short sharp zwift rides, and runs with the dog in my immediate future. Hopefully the base has been built up enough I can maintain some sort of endurance.

Hope you all had a good weekend.

No test for me over the weekend...really didn't get much sleep Friday night so just put in about 80 minutes in Z2/Z3 to match the prescribed workout in Trainer Road.

This week was a good "prep" week, now everything ramps up to the normal pattern for the next two mesocycles (Base 1 and Base 2).  4 rides and about 4 hours a week plus continuing to build strength, while maintaining a base in walking/running and swimming.  Day off today.  It's absolutely miserable out, pouring rain all day.

Welp...my coach finally dropped this week's schedule last night. *gulp* Ramp test today and a run threshold test on Wednesday and hill repeats on Sunday (with some other stuff in between, of course).

Ramp test was this morning, a little later than I was expecting. I didn't want to do it before my wife got up, you know...in case I screamed in misery, I didn't want to wake her up. So I got up early and was wading through work emails and taking care of things that came up over the long weekend--three and a half hours later, I finally got around to the ramp test! It went pretty well--at least, if my math is correct, my FTP went up 13 watts since my previous test in late August/early September. I didn't pass out or die...so that's pretty solid.

November Totals
Bike: 15h 01m 11s - 37.18 Mi (mostly on trainer, where I don't track "miles")
Run: 16h 11m 44s - 62.62 Mi (yup...just that slow)

Pretty solid month and a pretty solid increase of 11% in terms of time over October. I also looked back and found off the 33 workouts scheduled during the month of October, I hit all but two as prescribed. One workout was missed when a spoke broke after the wu and one I only managed 60' of a 75' workout. Pretty solid...as you all know...consistency is my main attribute in triathlon!

I'd think consistency is the most important attribute for anyone in tirathlon!

Speaking of consistency, I've just discovered that the last 2 months are the first time I've done 40+ hrs a month on consecutive months ever. #consistency.
