Subject: Going to give Tri another try!
I have not been on the site for a while and this is my first post ever. I began endurance sports 8 years ago at the age of 36 with an interest in triathlon and marathons. My problem is, I cant swim. I can make it 25yds, but that's about it. I spent a lot of time trying to learn and even competed in a few triathlons (nearly drown both times and came out of the water last). So I switched to Ultra running and that's where I've stayed for the last 7 years. I've been spending a lot of time on my bike trainer and it's always bugged me that I kinda gave up on triathlon, so here I am for round 2. Hope to pick up some tips here to help me with my swimming journey!!

Welcome to BT!

You definitely have the fitness for swimming. You may already know this, but form is a huge part of swimming. Being comfortable and keeping a low heart rate is second. Best of luck!

Totally relate! Have you looked into Total Immersion at all? I found the videos & drills very helpful & then consistency. consistency.consistency-forcing myself to swim swim swim. Still my least favorite of the 3 disciplines- but went from a 25yd "sinker" to completing full IM distance without drowning or being last . I stepped away from try as well and have been trail & ultra running but have the itch to tri this season- haven't been swimming in YEARS so should be interesting !

I have the total immersion book. I just started reading it and I guess when the pools open that's where I'll start. I am now where you started. I can make it 25 yds, but I am out of breath and have to stop at the wall to catch my breath before repeating. It is mentally tough to keep coming back when you can run 20 miles then come to the pool and about drown! Also, almost everyone tells me to find a masters group but I can't find any that exist in my area. I am determined though so I'm anxioulsly awaiting the pools to re open! Thanks for your help!

Once the pools open it might be worth finding an experienced swimmer or coach after you have been in the water for a week or two to critique you and give you some tips. They had a masters group at my local Y but didn't work for me as times didnt work as well as the focus was more on speed and I needed form & endurance. ..my goal was always to get through" the swim without exhaustion so I could get on to the bike & run!
