@Mike. Congratulations on the new and improved FTP. LIke Gretchen says though, that's a bit of a double edged sword this early in your bike plan. It's really gonna hurt now!

Me. Rest week is quieter than normal weeks. Monday was a day off, Tuesday 45 minutes Z2 on the treadmill and 1/2 hour physio routine. Wednesday was an hour tempo ride on zwift, which actually gave me all time high 20 and 30 minute power records (according to strava) Like the last record, I think that's more to do with not doing enough hard work previously than being particularly fit at the moment.

Tonight is another 45 minute treadmill session, and PT routine.

Keep on keeping on.

Your pool is warm?!?!?!?! Ours is decidedly not warm. Some days it is downright cold if the college team has a meet. It gets warmer in the summer when the college team is away and the old ladies who b!t@h constantly about it being too cold are the only voice in the room, but it is probably only "warm" about three days of the year (thankfully!!)

70' of lifting this morning. I'm getting dangerously close to being able to deadlift the amount of weight I lost (160lbs), so stay tuned for that milestone! I'd probably be there if I had better grip strength...or bought some weight lifting straps. But seriously, who needs one more piece of gear to keep track of?

At lunch I did what was supposed to be a 32' fartlek run with Purl, but turned into a 36' fartlek run because either I can't count or I can't divided six in half. Either way, I ended up doing 5 out and 1 on the return...oops! 20" fartleks with 1:40 rest between. Purl likes fartleks (and I like saying the word!). The first one she kept looking back to make sure I was still there. I don't think she believed I was still with her!

Well warm is relative. Compared to the ocean, or a home outdoor unheated pool, definitely warm.
Compared to a spa a bit chilly. I even looked it up, 81.5F (27.5C) N/A Corgi.

Speaking of which, I fell into the pool again today. So that's 2 weeks in a row. Does that count as proper tri training?

Depends...did you flail your arms about some and move a distance? If so...yes...tri training! Great job!

I looked it up. For the NCAA pool temp must be 26-27C (79-81F). I think we keep ours at the lower end of that range!

Yes, that’s cool! And yes, you do need another piece of gear, isn’t buying stuff part of the fun in sports? Doesn’t have to be new or expensive but buyings stuff is fun. I was very happy when I had to buy some goalie stuff to play floor hockey/floorball, even though most of it was second hand.

I’d say 26C/81F is warm for a lap pool, I think ours is around 23C (73F, comfortable corgi), feels cold at the beginning but it’s much better after few laps (from what I remember, haven’t been there in years.)

Edit Forget that, I have just looked it up, it’s the same as yours. Now we know

2400yds at the pool this morning and then a nice Z2 run with Purl at lunch. Now I’m donating blood. Guaranteed to make tomorrow’s run suck, but I won’t put two and two together and I’ll just be irritated to end the week on a bad workout. :D.

Test week continues with a Critical Swim Speed test in the pool this morning (ours is also in the low 80s, though sometimes depending on the day it gets up to like mid-80s).  Fine for a regular workout, not great for swimming really hard.  The test is a long warm up with some short primer sets, then an all-out 400 off the wall, 5-8 minutes of easy swimming and recovery, then an all-out 200, then cool down.  I paced the TT intervals perfectly - 400 was 1:43/1:45/1:44/1:40 and the 200 1:36/1:34 - can't ask for anything better than that and I was fully gassed at the end of each one.  CSS is 1:50, which was exactly my baseline estimate I had starting the plan.  Got in a recovery ride at lunch, just over a half hour or so. 

5K tomorrow.

Speaking of swimming, I need a new wetsuit as my early-season race is going to have pretty cold water (for me, anyway) and I need a full-sleeve.  What brand do you all wear, and what made you choose it?  I have a Promotion $99 sale cheapo one that has done the trick, but I'll probably get something a little better for a full-sleeved one.  Still looking for a bargain, though.    << I always look for an opportunity to use this emoji

35’ fast finish run that felt pretty good, even though I donated blood yesterday. That’s it for me today, as the pool is closed for a swim meet. I’ll fill the rest of the day with some chores and then we are celebrating our 25th anniversary tonight. I bought her a vacuum. The internet says that was a bad idea!

Actually, it is the upgraded version of the robovac we already have. It sweeps and mops and this new one even empties the bin automatically. The old one didn’t self-empty and we were emptying the dust bin about six times a day (dog hair!!) and the dang thing would run all day because it got stuck at night waiting for someone to empty it. First world problems…

Successfully ran a 5K without almost breaking an ankle, so that's a win!  And more or less ran it hard for 25+ minutes, but just didn't have the edge.  26:43 which I'll take after basically not running at all the month of September and just base running the last six weeks.  And I'm not sure three red-lining tests in four days is accurate but close enough.  I'll do a way-overblown race report tomorrow.  LOL

Gretchen, I am jealous of you being able to train after donating blood. It always takes me 3 to 4 weeks before I can perform after that. In fact, I suspect catching the flu was a direct consequence of donating blood 2 weeks ago. I should stop really.

Rest day here that turned out to not be so restful. My wife asked for some steps off our patio (insert here a very quality rant about the fact that I specifically asked her if she wanted steps off this section of the patio when I built it and she said no!). That wasn’t so hard, but while I was outside I kept noticing a slight gas odor. I had to get something out of the basement and whoa…our basement smelled like it was just full of gas (meter is right next to a window). Anyway…short story long…we are lucky to be alive. Gas leak. Gas company came and fixed it pretty quickly (at no cost to us), but entirely not what I wanted to do with my day. I did finish the first rise of the steps, but now I’m trying to reclaim some of my rest day by watching the last quarter of the Ravens game. Nicole and Mike—your guys know they can try to win at the beginning of the game too, right? (Which is a question I could ask of the chiefs too).

Congratulations on 25 years. It's our 10th is 2 weeks, we're not doing gifts (So no household appliances here), but are going away for 4 days kid free down to Queenstown.

I have a full sleeve Blue 70 wetsuit. I forget the specific model name, but an entry level one. It's fine, does the job. Has got me through several half's and one full Ironman swim. I also have a sleeveless DHB (From wiggle.com before they went broke) which I prefer.

2 reasons I prefer the sleeveless, 1. the full sleeve feels more restricted in my shoulders. 2 The full sleeve has left me with nasty chafing on the back of my neck, doesn't seem as bad with the sleeveless. Otherwise I don't think Im a good enough swimmer to notice what the differences are.

@Nat. Hope you're felling better now.

@Gretchen. Wow, bullet dodged finding that gas leak! Nice job on your workouts during the week. I feel your pain about the home design committee changing their mind after jobs have already been done. One of the jobs I ticked off this weekend was removing a heap of plants from beside our driveway, that I wanted gone 8 years ago when we moved in, but Mrs BF thought looked nice. 8 years ago would have been a half hour job. Saturday it was 4-5 hours, 2 broken spades, a chainsaw, a modified line trimmer with a fixed blade and a log splitting axe. It all looks much nicer with new planting now, but much like your stairs, would have been much easier to do it the first time!

@Mike, 3 fitness tests in 4 days is nasty. Well done getting it all done, and especially for getting through that 5k with no fresh injuries! I'll be looking forward to that race report.

@Nicole, must be surgery week. Hope that everything is going well.

Ironman plan week 8/23 is in the books. It was a rest week, so a bit lighter for frequency, duration of my workouts. I also had one last big push on the landscaping/cabin works. So got lots of intensity there.

Swim, x1, 1,000m, 24 minutes. Fell in the water again this week. Not much to report but at least my goggles aren't leaking.

Bike, x2, Both zwift, 2hr 30 minutes. I skipped my weekend ride due to the amount of landscaping work I did on the weekend. (sorry coach Gretchen, I know the answer should be to get up at 3am to be finished workouts in time for a full 8 hour yard work day. WWGD) But as it was a rest week trying to reach Sunday less fatigued than I was Monday was a priority.

Run, x3, 2hr 42min, 20km. 2 x evening treadmill jogs, 1 real run. Nothing much exciting, just ticking off miles.

S/M. x2 1hr. All physio kneehab sessions. the sessions are getting a bit longer, up to half an hour each now so taking more effort to get them in. But trying to be a good patient.

Overall about 6 and a half hours of training, which sounds about right for a rest week.

The coming week is mostly a 'normal' schedule, but with 1 days travel for work midweek which will result in an unscheduled no training day.
