Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina
United States
Wilmington YMCA
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 34m
Overall Rank = 339/561
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 47/65
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00, put sleeping 7 year-old in the car. Drank some Accelerade only ate half a PB bagel. Arrived at race site around 5:20. Usual packet, chip, body marking. Also got my trash bag for return of ls shirt and sandals from swim start. Took trolley to swim start, talked with Dick (spot) for a bit on the ride over and in the dark at the beach. Found a place on the beach to sit and go over race in my head.
Event warmup:

Ran about 8 minutes...didn't want to miss the bus.
Swim
  • 27m 49s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 51s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not my best. I felt a little bit heavy in the water...maybe I actually do need a $200 wetsuit for these longer swims. I was 2 minutes faster last year. Towards the end I saw every color cap around me except my own wave. I thought I might have been one of the last ones out...but looking at the final resultsI had 15 or 20 still behind me. Not too crowded, swam on top of one guy for a bit, finally got around him. Breathed bilaterally for a while so I could catch a glimpse of the sunrise.
What would you do differently?:

New wetsuit...and the usual "I wish I could swim three times per week" complaint.
Transition 1
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

Included the long run from swim exit (across the street) to transition. I don't do the shoes on the bike-thing...probably never will...too high risk for me. Wetsuit came off ok.
Bike
  • 37m 1s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Nothing special. I am still surprised by the vehicle traffic of this race. There are so many other places around Wilmington that they could do the bike...it feels like downtown Raleigh at times. Probably drank to much as I had to pee on the run.
What would you do differently?:

I still need to get my power up...I am MOP to BOP in my age group...and it will only get worse when I move to 35-39. I don't like to get passed...but starting in wave 2, I get passed a lot, even when I am doing well by my own standards.
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

My right toes were asleep. It felt like my insole was crunched up into the toe of my shoe...but it went away when my toes woke up.
Run
  • 25m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run...I need to be doing 23:30 or 24:00...so a bit slow. I ran with one of the pro wrestlers for a while...he ended up beating me by a bit. I actually stopped to pee in one of the construction port-a-johns in that neighborhood we ran through.
What would you do differently?:

Drink less water leading up to race. Run faster!!
Post race
Warm down:

Doritoes and coke. (After some gatorade). Hung out with family, and Spot, Onefoottheother and Nctrinewbie...nice meeting you guys! Hope to see you at Pinehurst (and in 07).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor training month of August...no regrets though, as I spent a ton of time with my family.

Event comments:

This is a great race...they said it was the largest on the east coast this year...pretty cool. I am now at the point in my training where I think I have maxed out - with the amount of training time I have available. I don't want my time with my wife and son to be affected...so for next year I need to get creative with finding training time...it might be time to pay for some swim instruction or tri training help???

Nice race! Family time is usually more important than training time.

great race. Enjoyed meeting you and your wife and son. He was a trooper to be up that early and out there until just before lunch. Good luck next week. I know it will be fun.

Great race, Chris! I'm so glad I got over my post race stupidity long enough to wander over to where NCTriNewbie was standing ... so I got to meet you, your son and spot!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again in Pinehurst! I'll be working the swim exit, which should still give me time to get my jockstrapping done!

Nice race Chris, sorry I missed meeting you and the rest of the BT'ers. Maybe at Pinehurst.
Seems like you have a nice balance of training and family going, keep up the good work.

Great race!

It was certainly nice to meet you, your family, and the other BTers this weekend. It's always nice to put names and faces together...even if I don't always remember the names.

See you in Pinehurst!
