Pre-race routine:

Drove to race-took about 50 minutes
Event warmup:

Ran 40 minute warm up since this was long run day ;-) - I ran out about 2 miles and on the way back I had a strange experience - almost like a bonk, where I was just real low on energy - not sure what it was, but I sped up to change up my energy systems and it seemed to work - I had a gel when I got back to the truck, then changed and ran over to the start line and did a few strides. Legs felt good, lungs not so good. I also did BMG warm up as well.

Comments:

Started out steady at a pace I thought I could maintain for the entire run - ran into about 10th by mile 2 or so, but shortly after the lead woman and another guy I do battle with pulled even and then I battled hard to stay ahead of this guy, but I just didn't have it- another woman pulled in front of me and I pretty much stayed there. I tried to put in some surges but no matter how hard I went, I remained the same distance back - I would say that physically I was not feeling great, but it was a good mental exercise to be able to push that hard for that long. There were no mile markers so I had to keep reaching into the mental bag of tricks to keep myself motivated: "ok, only 20 minutes to go", or "just run hard for 5 more minutes and you'll see the finish" etc - I had a guy come up on about 1 mile from the finish, and I had to put in about a 4' surge- cripes that almost killed me - but still I didn't make up any ground on the girl in front of me and I kept him at bay.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I have had some solid running weeks as of late, so at some point the fatigue would catch up with me. I think the weights from yesterday did me in more than anything. My hamstrings are SO tight.

Great race!  I will say that you looked pretty tired when you came across the finish line!  But that means you worked hard!  Congrats on winning the mental battle.

Good to see you again!

Nice run! I ran that race last year and loved it. I was all set to run it this year but ended up running a 10 mile trail race in Wyoming (Silent Trails) - you'd probably like it. Maybe I'll see you at next year's Barr Lake Boogie.
