Is anyone familiar with the strategy of wearing a pair of shorts under your bike shorts for half and full iron distances? The thought being that you can wear a thicker chamois for the bike, then strip those off for the run. Obviously you'd want that under pair of shorts to have no seams to irritate on the ride.

i have found that less is better for longer rides.  i prefer tri shorts (desoto power tri's to be my favourite) to cycling shorts as i find  less padding = less bunching and chafing.  i would think 2 pairs would be double the stuff to bunch up and rub.

as always, train with what ever type of shorts or combo of you plan to race with.

Any minor benefit to having the extra padding would be more than cancelled out by the extreme chafing of the run shorts UNDER your bike shorts.  The chamois' primary purpose is to prevent chafing.  Padding is secondary in my opinion.    Plus you would also have to swim in both of those shorts first.  I think it sounds painful.

For Iron distance races, just take the time to change in transition.  When you are looking at a 12+ hour race time, adding 5 min to a transition to change clothes isn't going to matter unless you are a serious age grouper.  It's much easier to make up a little lost time during a 112 mi ride or a 26 mile run then it is say for the 40k/15k of an oly.

Never heard of this though I've heard of wearing bike shorts over your tri shorts, then strip your bike shorts off for the run.

I really think the key is the right saddle. Once I got the right saddle I didn't care if my shorts were padded at all.

Thanks to all who took a moment to post here. Sounded strange to me too, but I've had some saddle sore issues and hate running with any kind of padding in the crotch of my shorts. My only iron goal (for now anyway) is to finish so it sounds like changin at T-2 is the smart thing to do.

Thanks again!

What saddle did you get? I need more padding on my saddle! My sit bones dig into my current saddle, no matter how thick my shorts are.

Now on topic.

I could see myself wearing my tri shorts UNDER some cycling shorts for HIM. Why? Because my butt could not handle riding 56 miles on just tri shorts... and they don't let you change at HIM's.

My tri shorts are tight and don't chafe, so why would they start if I put bike shorts over them?
