Total Time = 2h 32m 37s
Overall Rank = 3587/4570
Age Group = F40-44
Age Group Rank = 213/315
Pre-race routine:

Arrived at American Airlines Center at 6:30 to get a decent parking space. Took a good book as my race didn't start until 9:00.

Ate a GU 30 minutes before start. Went outside 15 minutes prior to start and did some jogging in place.
Run
  • 2h 32m 37s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal was just to finish. I expected to run a 12 m/mi pace, so my pace was a bit better than I thought. I averaged 11:30 or below for most of the miles until 12 miles. I had to run/wwalk after 3 miles to keep my HR below threshhold.
What would you do differently?:

Do more training.
Post race
Warm down:

Went inside American Airlines Center and stretched.

Very cool (First?) Half Marathon.

Of course beating your goal by more than a little bit is always a big bonus.

Yup, my first. I've never done anything longer than a 5K before, though in trainig I did manage a 10 mile run two weeks before the race. (Shoulda been four weeks before, but illness in October put my the timing of my build-up off.)

It was really a great event--very well organized. I guess with over 12,000 runners, they have to be! What I loved best were the neighborhood folks. All along the route there were ordinary people out cheering, holding signs, and slapping high fives--some even had their own "goodies" out, such as oranges, pretzels, cookies, etc. I also liked the musicians spaced out at various points on the route--that always gave me a boost.

I'm sore as hell this morning but I think I may do this again next year.

Yeah, I was worried about the rain. I bought a run jacked with a hood last week just in case.

Did you have fun?

Overall...I would say yes. I can tell I haven't done any actual "running" in a while. So, I had some issues during the run. My legs and feet were not as recovered as I thought they were from the event last month. But hey...that is expected when you are beating the ground w/ 265-270 pounds..haha. I am really thinking about going to Run On for some classes and to get others to run w/.

I also enjoyed the people along the route. I actually saw one of my High School teachers on that long straight, after you turn right @ the half / full split. I think I scared her when I ran up on her..haha.. it has been 14 years....and I don't looke exactly the same. I also liked the iced animal crackers in the last few miles. haha.

The only part that I did not like was the there were no finisher medals when I came across. I don't know when they ran out, but there were about 130 people that finished behind me...so, there were quite a few that didn't get them. I was lucky, that there were 4 people that went down there with us and they run a lot of full marathons...So, they gave me one of theirs after I finished...they were just going to throw it in a box and put it up...

I will be running it again next year.

Gee, that's not right--not having a medal. I understand they had more people sign up than they expected, but it seems they could keep a list (bib numbers) of those who didn't get 'em and send them to you. I know at the packet pick-up they had run out of small and medium t-shirts but they had us sign a form so they can mail it to us in a couple of months. That's great, though, that your friend gave you his medal. It so funny: I have a friend who's a great runner, wins all the triathlon AG she participates in and 5Ks, and she just throws all her trophies and medals and plaques in a box. Just goes to show you the differnce between a champion and a plodder: I have all my medals (and there ain't many) proudly on display.
