Subject: HR strap leaving a mark on your skin?
The HR transmitter that rests again my chest for my Polar is leaving a dark spot (dark brown skin-like), right where it lays. To make sure I'm not going crazy, I started wearing the thing a little off to the side but another spot is appearing there too. WTH?!?

Anyone with this kind of experience? Any skin MD's out there with recommendations on what this could be/how to prevent/diminish this?

Thanks

Forgot to mention it's only the transmitter piece, not the strap that wraps around. And yes, I wash it immediately after every use. Maybe time to change it? It's about 2 years old but still working.

What kind of material covers the transmitter? Is it metal? Many people have a nickel allergy.

Haley has an alergy to the Timex HRM.

Borrow a different brand from someone and see how that reacts.

I was wondering who else remembered that thread.  This one is not as much fun.  No offense to you, cobannero.

One of my running mentors had the same problem.  He now uses ultrasound gel on his skin and hasn't had any issues.  It's a conductor so it helps find your HR a lot faster while offering a buffer on your skin.  I use it too, I get it for about $5 a bottle.

If that gel works, they actually sell a HRM gel that you could get fairly easily. Here's a link to the one I found at all3sports:

If you have not washed your HR strap for awhile, the bacteria/fungus can cause skin rash and, subsequently, discolouration after the rash dries out. Just soak it in warm soapy water every week.

Since I started doing that, I found I had no problems.
