Subject: Tri Bike question
I have a 2000 Klein Quantum Race that I have been using as my training/Long Ride bike. I am getting into Tri's and have been training on it but was wondering if I should dedicate a tri bike. I kind of want to keep my Klein as my distance/club ride bike and get a TRI bike. Should I think about it the other way and turn my Klein into my TRI bike and buy something else (cheaper) to use as my distance bike?

The Klein is setup with Ultegra and some other good componentry already. I'm kind of thinking that a TRI would not involve as much shifting as my normal training rides would and I could get away with 105 stuff or maybe just the ultegra derailer.

Any thoughts? I have an older Aluminum Miyata and Schwinn World but they are both downtube shifter bikes.

If you can afford it, you're better off getting a decent tri-specific bike than converting your Klein. True tri-bikes have a different geometry, including a steeper seat tube angle, shorter chainstays, etc., and possibly stiffer bottom brackets that give you greater efficiencies while saving your running muscles.

Will cheaper bike components be a detriment in my TRI's if I'm not able to afford the higher end stuff right away?

My bike and swim may be my strong point in the TRI and I would like to have the right equipment to make up time I will lose on the run.

You have the road bike, so why not keep it for training and buy a tri specific bike. There is nothing "cheap" about 105, it is good entry level racing componentry. As for good entry level tri bikes, your choices are only limited by your pocketbook. Take a look at the various bikes available from Nytro at http://www.nytro.com/bike-bikes-tri.html

If you can afford Ultegra, then go for it, but 105 is perfectly adequate and should not be a detriment.

Of course I have to point out an alternative strategy, which is to work harder on your run to bringit more in line with the other two disciplines. Better training vs better equipment

Yep, getting my run faster would definetely help and as the weight comes down from 247, I'm sure it will be easier to run.

I looked at the Cervelo One at lunch. I think I would upgrade to the Dual if I went Cervelo though.

Yes, dropping the tonnage should help he run immensely, probably won't hurt the swim and bike either.

If I had to buy a tri bike today, it would be the Dual. Unless someone gave me $7K, then I'd be all over this puppy:

The Cervélo Dual would be an excellent choice for your first tri bike. I wouldn't worry about the weight being too excessive for this bike as the frame is very strong.
