Sioux Valley Indoor Triathlon - TriathlonMini Sprint

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
United States
Sanford Health Systems
Sunny
Total Time = 11h 00m
Overall Rank = 36/39
Age Group = 20-29
Age Group Rank = 3/3
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at about 7am
Swim
  • 11m 57s
  • 492 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

The first 3 or 4 laps I swallowed entirely too much pool water after being placed next to TC Frazier, an all around athlete. After that I found my pace, which while admittedly slow, was comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Race my own race instead of trying to catch TC.
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

Since this was an indoor triathlon the transitions weren't timed. BUT I did make it from the pool and to the bikes fully changed in the above listed time.
What would you do differently?:

Have an extra towel to dry off feet.
Bike
  • 05m 45s
  • 3 miles
  • 31.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike ride felt very strong. I had the highest time for my age group by almost 3 minutes and the 2nd fastest overall.
What would you do differently?:

Take a higher cadence on the last quarter mile to avoid jelly legs.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

I thought I was going to die. Luckily since this was indoor the entire process was very lax and I just walked slowly over to the running area.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe crawl to through t2?
Run
  • 11m 27s
  • 1 miles
  • 11m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

My stride was far too short due to jelly legs. First 8 laps were literally more of a shuffle, at lap 8 I caught sight of another runner just starting her run. I caught and passed her on lap 12.
What would you do differently?:

Try to lengthen stride and not drink as much.
Post race
Warm down:

1 mile cooldown walk/stumble. It was a walk of pride as I was congradulated by many gym staff members and gym go'ers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Getting into my own head.

Event comments:

I loved this! It was my first tri-experience and allowed me to 'dip my feet' into the water before diving headfirst in. I wish there were more postrace stuff, but the bagels and OJ sufficed just fine.

Coming into a race at 288 and finishing only 5 minutes behind the winner of my age group gave me a lot to look forward to. Next year I will be giving him a run for his money.

I've got a sprint distance in June, July, and August! Sadly there aren't too many here in South Dakota so I'll be travelling to some. So if you see any good tris in Sept/Oct that are sprint distance let me know!

Perfect - that gives you a few months to get ramped up for the next one(s).

Here is a link to tri-find - may help you find races in your area.

By the way - saw the photo's on the other post - awesome job.  The indoor track is a strange concept to us here in california - but I guess you folks have tougher winters than we do.

nice race.  Sounds like a fun concept.  You were smokin' on the bike.  Can't imagine doing that.

They just announced a new sprint in the Denver area in Sept.  It is in conjunction with a HIM.  Check out the CO forum for the website.

I'll make sure to check that out. The bike portion will always be my strong point. Having started this journey nearly 400lbs I am blessed with STRONG legs.. I just wish that would correlate more into running, which is my BIGGEST struggle.

Totally hooked.. no no.. I'm beyond that point. I'm doing multiple sprint tris this year and already planning some olys for 08, who knows what 09 will bring!

You have a sister here in Sioux Falls? Does she workout anywhere right now?
