My husband and I are taking our teenage sons to Alaska in June for our summer vacation. I am military so we are looking into staying at a military resort in Seward, which seems to be near a lot of great areas of interest. I was wondering if there are any folks out there who have experience with Alaska and can suggest some things to see/do while we are there. I am sort of the eco tour/outdoors type and am interested in showing our boys as much of the natural Alaska experience as we can. We will probably take some day trips and an overnighter or two as well.

Thanks in advance!

My father and I took a 30 day trip and visited my sister in Kenai (100 miles from Seward) a few years back. The Kenai Fjords are spectacular. You'll be there during the King salmon run. If fishing isn't your thing, at least visit one of the rivers to experience the "combat fishing" (dozens of fishermen shoulder to shoulder along the bank). Another memorable experience was float fishing/picture taking down the Kenai river.

If you're going in June there's plenty of time to train for and run the Anchorage marathon!

I really think our trip to Alaska was the most fun of the many we have taken. We only spent a week there, so I'm not an expert by any means, but I would highly recommend taking the drive up to Denali NP. Not that bad a drive, though you may want to make it an overnighter, maybe two nights with a visit to the park on the day in between. Plenty of hiking opportunities within the park, but even if you only take the bus tour into the park (up to 10 hours round-trip, if I remember correctly), it will give you great exposure and appreciation of the vast beauty of the area as well as a chance to view many of the wildlife species. We saw lots of moose and bear along with dozens of minor species.

We also took a midnight whitewater rafting trip out of Chickaloon which I recommend highly. Maybe a little tame for experienced whitewater rafters, but it was great fun for us. The outfitters were very experienced and all the equipment (including dry suits) was fairly new and in great shape. This is the one we took:

This is the B&B where we stayed, very nice place and people. Not bad prices either, seven of us rented the whole place for the night.

We found The Mile Post to be a great reference guide, it's really a mile-by-mile description of what you find along the Alaskan highways.:

Have a greaat time. Be glad to entertain any specific questions.

We spent 2 weeks there on a family vacation a couple of years ago.  I sent your our 'trip report' via email.  Seward is a neat little town.

HI Susan,

I live up here and my husband is military so if you have any specific questions just let me know. I've lived here since 84...been a military wife for 4 years. Never been to the Seward Resort, but know a lot about other areas.

Enjoy,

Janelle

I spent time there attending Norther Warfare Training while in the Army, but that was way up there in Ft Greeley. I would love to return to Alaska though, as it is beautiful! Have a great trip.
