The only pool I have (without paying another membership) is a shorter one at my gym. I'm guessing the length to be about 20 yds. Anyone have this problem? Looking for a little advice to make planning my workouts easier.

A 100 yd drill would be a real pain in the butt if I had to do 4 and a half lengths

i also swim in a 20 yard pool. i do everything at 80, 160, 240, etc. i use the worksouts from the 'swim workouts in a binder' book. when i swam in a 25 yard pool, i never had time to get too all the drills i wanted to do...but now i have time to get to all of them.

i guess if your routine calls for 4 x 100...instead of trying to do 4 x 100, do 5 x 80. you'll still get the same distance w/o having half laps or lengths.

I'm using a 20yd pool as well. A trick I use to keep my counts lower-- I tend to let my mind wander and forget the count, is to count down and back as 1. I may also break my workout into 200's or 400's.

Ha, I wish mine were that long. I am in the "country" and the only pool I have is at our fitness center at our hospital. It is about 13 yards long. We measured it, and it is 140 lengths for a mile. An olympic size pool feels like an open water swim for me... But, I guess if that is all you have, that is all you have...

One of the pools I use sometimes is 20 yards, but has no lane lines and often is empty, so I'll swim corner to corner to get longer laps.

Not sure about your math on this one.  100yds = 5 lengths of a 20 yd pool.    Shouldn't be a big deal to count to 5  instead of 4 to do 100 yards.

Maybe he was thinking about meters not yards? hmmmmm

There's no rule that says drills have to be 100 yards (or meters). If you like to start and end at the same side of the pool, just do 6 lengths. That's 120 yards, which is around 109 meters or so. The way I figure it, the extra 9 meters can only help.

Now as for the added turning, I don't guess I would like that very much.

Speaking about the turning on a 20yd pool, that is definitely something that gets into the way.

The first is that it interferes by breaking me up when I'm in a good groove. The other is wondering if the extra breath or potential kick-off is making me think I'm at a better level than i actually am.

well if you are worried about the extra kick off making you feel faster than you are just do not kick off so hard. hold yourself back sure your training is slow but popping out of the water 8 minutes faster than expect is alot better than popping out 8 minutes slower espically if your racing against the clock.

If you want my two cents (and you probably don't) I would be paying to use another pool.

I have access to a free one that I just think is too hot and the hours suck.  So I pay to use a better one.

If you're THAT worried about it...get a pool membership.  I know I wouldn't be able to stand a 20 yard pool.  It would drive me crazy.

Ditto 25 yards is short enough!

Only another week or so and the point A to point B to point C OWS start

I was actually bitc*ing the other day cuz my pool, which is 50 yds, was too long.  My workout called for 8X25 speed sprints on 20 seconds rest.  I suck too much to translate that into 4X50, so I had to stop halfway.  I was real self-conscious about standing there in the middle of the pool huffing and puffing.
But i guess I should be greatful.  50 yds has forced me to work harder then I would have had I the opportunity to grab some side at 25.

44 laps of a 25m pool is a mile, not a 20y pool.

Oh and Zenith - stop half way in the pool to do 25s. My swim club does that all the time

Here's one for you.  For a year I trained in a pool that everyone told me was 20 yds.   But it seemed short, so one day me and the lifeguard got out the tape measure....17 yards!!!!  Who builds a 17 yard pool?   And entire year  I was 3 yards short on every lap!!!

44 laps x 20 yards is only 880 (half mile) 1760 yards = 1 mile

No wonder that mile time was sooooo quick!!!

I'd love that!  When I travel to Hong Kong we stay at a hotel with a 40 meter pool on the roof, sweet!  I swim 80yd lengths in a small county park "lake" that I use too when it warms up some.

The pool at my gym is also 20 meters. I feel like a ping pong ball bouncing back and forth between the walls. It is not the most fun, but certainly not the end of the world. You can still get in a good workout.

For 100 meter/yard drills, swim 5 laps. For 50, shorten them to 40 or extend them to 60.

I occasionally will pay to use a county pool that is 25 meters and do enjoy the extra 5 meters with each lap.

my pool is 25 yards minus 6".  Apparently there is some state statue that any state university with a pool of official length (25 or 50 yards) must hold collegate AND high school swim meets.  Apparently the school didn't want to do that, so it chopped off 6"

I swim in a 50 FOOT pool..that's right 16.67 yds!!!  It's 2 miles from home and my son LOVES the day care there, so switching gyms/pools is not an option.  Since I just started getting faster, I definitely get dizzy doing all those laps.  I did notice though when I went with family to a 25 yd pool that I was looking for the wall way earlier than I should be.  If you have a pool swim Tri scheduled, I would try and see if you could get at least 1-2 training sessions in a longer pool before your race.  If no pool swim tri, then stick it out until you can OWS.

As far as making training easier..I have converted everything to fit my pool.  For example, I know 100's are 3 laps (6 touches), 50's are 1.5 laps (3 touches), etc.  Where the fun starts is when I just want to do long swims..1 mile is 53 laps (106 touches).  I would suggest measuring the pool so you know EXACTLY how long it is.  I just brought my own tape measure one day.

The pool where I swim is also 50 FEET. I am real good at flip turns. Sometimes I get thinking about school or whatever and forget that I have like two breaths and need to watch for the wall - dang, it messes with my breathing rhythm.
