Subject: TIre life expectancy - is there a range?
I am aware of the many factors that play role in life expectancy of our equipment but is there a "general rule of thumb" - (like 400mi for running shoes) one can go by with bicycle road tires?

I just installed a set of Armadillo's on mine due to the terrible road trash & many flats I experience on my favorite road. They are supposed to be tougher so I'm curious what mileage expectancy to look forward to. (NOTE: I got about 1,800mi on the original tires that came with the bike - Specialized)

I called 3 bike shops and got 3 totally different answers - ranging from 2,000-10,000 miles. Is 3,000 more realistic?

Thanks

For me it has depended on the tire itself...I had a set of Maxxis Courchevel tires that wore out after like 2500 miles, but the Maxxis Equipe Legeres I have now seem to be lasting quite a lot longer.

I just replace them when I see noticeable wear.

Nope, the 2,000-10,000 is more realistic. You've got such a wide range because you have a wide range of different rubber compounds used in the different brands of tires, nearly every model is going to wear a little different. I've had some that have lost the outer tread in less than 1,000 miles and some that show little wear after 5,000.

In running shoes, it's the cushioning that breaks down, not the tread.

Armadillos are "tougher" because they have puncture-resistant bead-to-bead casing, not necessarily because the outer tread is longer lasting.

I've heard many good things about the Armadillos esp for NYC riding and I hope you have better luck w/ them but I think a lot of it is just that, luck. I was gonna switch to them too bc the Michelin PR2's I got flatted often when I first got them. Since then I've gone quite a few hundred miles with better luck. My point is, it's often the  roads not the tires that cause the flats (like cabs aren't enough fornus  to worry about!)

Also depends on road conditions you ride in. Chip-seal or rough roads will wear
out tread sooner than smooth blacktop.

I'm pretty sure that courchevel's are race tires, which is why they wore out so fast. I have some tire that have lasted a long time: Maxxis re-fuse. They have kevlar beads in the tread.

rear tires will wear faster than the front, too.

crap on the road will kill them.
I use Continental Gatorskins which are pretty good...
However, I had to replace my last one after about 100 miles because it was sliced open though I couldn't figure out how it happened. (went through a tire liner too!)

I rarely wear a tire out. 9 our of 10 times they are pothole, glass, et cetera fatalities.

Being a full-figured gal I expect my tires not to last as long of those more petite triathletes. Last year I had my bike in the shop and they told me my tires were worn out. I said "But the bike is brand new and I've only got about 1,200 miles on it!" They said in the interest of making the bike feel as light as possible in the showroom, bike manufactures will put really thing tires on the bikes. Plus they said "you kinda of a big guy…" like I needed them to point that out! :-)

They put heavier tires on and I expect them to last a little longer this time!
