Pre-race routine:

This race started at 7:00 am, so I didn't have to get up as early as usual. Got up at 5:45, took a shower, schmeared on lots of sunscreen. Ate a bowl of oatmeal. My friend Shawna came over and we drove to the race which was only 10 minutes away.
Event warmup:

Met up with the others from my training group and chatted for a while. I should have been warming up and stretching, but I was feeling social. Decided I better visit the portapotty before the race, so got a VIP pass and used the VIP portapotties. There was coffee, bagels, and fruit in the VIP section, but I thought I better not eat anything more before the race.

Comments:

I was mentally and physically prepared for this race. I started training in December with a great training group. This is one race I wasn't nervous about. I was relaxed during the run. I made an effort to start out at a slow pace, didn't want to burn out too fast. This was a fun race. I was hoping to finish under two hours, but when I hit the timing mat at the halfway point, I knew I wouldn't make it if I slowed down at all. Even though I missed my goal by four minutes, I still improved my time from last year by 7 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

I had fun and other than not finishing under 2 hours, I don't know what I would have done differently.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my "big honkin' medal" and walked around a bit, drank a gatorade, ate a piece of bagel then waited for the awards ceremony. I needed some better post-race food, so we went to Sauce and had a Fat Tire beer and a melon and proscuitto pizza. It was WONDERFUL. Then had to have dessert so went next door to Frost for some gelato.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

About mile 11 I started having hamstring issues and slowed down a bit to stretch them. I made a conscious effort to shorten my stride to alleviate the hamstring pain.

Event comments:

John Bingham race. They always have plenty of volunteers. Awards ceremony only included the overall and masters top three winners for male and female. No age group award recognition, they had the age groupers go to a tent and pick up their awards there. I think the age groupers should have received SOME recognition. The age groupers are just as important as the elite runners.

Awesome job!! 7 minutes is ALOT to improve over a 13.1 mile run!  That's like 30 seconds per mile for the whole run!  Great work!!! Whoop whoop!!
