Subject: Shimano Cassette Compatibility Q.

OK, Q for the bike shop gurus...My tri bike has DA 7800, with a 10-speed cassette on the rear wheel.  My road bike has a 105, with a 9 speed cassette on the rear wheel.

The Q is:  Can I use the rear wheel with a DA10 cassette on the road bike currently set up for the 9-speed?  If so, what adjustments need to be made?  Thanks in advance.

You can't use the 10sp. cassette on the 9sp bike--the chain is too wide for the narrow spacing of the 10sp. cassette. What you can do is put the 9sp. cassette on the 10sp. wheel.

yeah its a clearence issue. When they went to 10speed all they did was shrink the spacing between cogs and made the chain skinnier. so the 9-speed to 10speed swap or vice versa wont work

Thanks for the input, Jim's and Aaron.

And a follow on question.  I got conflicting information from the Shimano website (which says you can't use the DA Freehub with a 9-speed cassette), and sheldon brown (who says you can use a DA freehub with a 9-speed cassette, but you have to use a spacer).

Can anyone confirm either of these?

Horsepucky .... you can run an 8, 9, or10 speed cassette on any and all 8/9/10 speeed hubs.  The only thing you might need is a thin spacer (like 1 or 2mm) to make sure they are snug in place and don't "rattle."  The slotting is the same for all three (the grooves on the inside of the cassette).
