If I were to buy a toy, it would definitely be a Jeep. They are the best vehicle stock for off road. The new 4 door Rubicons seem like they are a great toy. Unfortunately my body hates to be bumped around and a solid axle is just too rough of a ride. At least with the IFS of the FJ I can fly down a bumpy road and not feel the bumps. I wish the FJ had a removable top like the older ones. I had a 94 Wrangler and loved the fun part.

I never KNEW I could love a vehicle so much.  I only thought I loved what I had before, but now I am completely in love because my life right now is all about fun, so if I were a vehicle, this is what I'd be:

In Montreal the Jeep is seen as the most environmental car on the road... because it's biodegradable (it rusts if you even look at it with a tear in your eye).

Here we are... me, Rita Gaspar (my car has a first and last name, of course) and my friend Whitney, last summer.

What a coincidence. My bologne has a first name and a last name.

Is that the WRX?

Yup. It's great. Haven't come close to getting stuck in the snow (some deep snow too) and it goes up the hill to the mountains lickety-split. And I can get around 30mpg which is great for all wheel drive. Did I mention its quick?

Mmm. Yeah, I have to admit to loving cars even though they are a sinkhole for money, and the novelty wears off. I have a '99 Impreza wagon and I don't plan on buying a new car until I absolutely have to. It's just too much dough. The WRX is very nice. The STi would be pretty cool too, although we know that a car like that is really only good to have when you're on a racecourse.

I have a contrarian position. I hate my car. It's a 96 Saturn SL2 with 120,000 miles. The "Service Engine Soon" light is perpetually on, and technically it's not *legally registered*. It is covered in bike grease stains.

I named her Edna, because she's the mechanical equivalent of an elderly lady. I have forgotten what it's like to exceed the speed limit thanks to Edna.

My wife's 99 Cavalier feels like a rocket to me.

Oh yes - she's gold, with a gold cloth interior. The very definition of cool.

That was choice #2, but we went with the Rav4 for two reasons:

- we're coming from a Jeep, so we wanted to go with something the same size

- the posted MPG on the turbo (Eric insisted) was lower than the MPG on the Rav4 v6

But the WRX was hot.  I liked it.

I love my Matrix.  However, my bike won't fit in it unless I put the back seat down and lay the bike down.  This makes transporting the other 3 family members hard.  I made the mistake of not getting a roof rack.   When I took the Matrix in for service, I was looking at the cars on the lot.   I was looking at minivans and of course the RAV-4.  I was wondering how the RAV4 compares to the Honda CRV....   I seriously might trade it in.  Do you put your bike in the back with front wheel off?

We haven't traveled with the bike in the Rav yet, but we did put them in last night to see how it fit, since we haven't had the receiver put on yet for the bike rack.  We took the front wheels off and put them in on the side with the read seats folded down.  They fit perfectly.  And I think we can get away with only folding down half of the rear seat and it will be fine.  Plus there's tons of room left for the camping gear, etc.

But, that's not going to be the normal mode of bike transport.  We have a bike rack that fits into a receiver hitch, and as soon as we get one put on the new vehicle, that's how we'll roll.

As for comparing the Rav4 and the CRV, there was no comparison for us.  We test drove the WRX turbo wagon, first and loved the the power, but weren's happy with the fact that it felt like a "car" rather than an SUV.

Then we drove the Rav4, and liked it even more.  Lots of power in the V6, and lots of room.

Then we drove the CRV and were a bit disappointed.  The sales guy riding with us said, "You won't find power like this in any other car out there."  Eric and I just looked at each other and smiled.  We didn't even take it on any hills.  I just didn't like the way it handled compared to the Rav4.

Not saying it's a bad car.  It's not.  I have a couple of friends who have CRVs and they just love them. So they're not bad.  Just not what we were looking for.

Huh. Interesting. Well mine is a 1997, and there's not a visible spot of rust on it.....maybe that kicks in later than 10 years?  I'll keep my eyes peeled, thanks for the warning!

My bike is small enough that I can haul it in my Cr-V without taking off the wheel.  Not sure about larger bikes.  I have to put my seats down also - though I'm sure if I took the front wheel off I could haul my bike sideways in the back compartment with the seats up.  Whatever the case, I rarely drive my car with the seats up anyways, because I tend to use my CR-V more like a pick-up truck.   Not sure about comparisons between the RAV4 and CRV, and I can attest to the fact that there are many days when I wish I had a V-6, which is not available on the CRV.  However, when I fill-up the gas tank I pat myself on the back for owning a 4 cylinder.

The CR-V and the Element both have the V-TEC 4 cylinders.  If I am not mistaken, they have 160 hp.  Trust me, they have enough power.  The CR-V (My mom used to have one before she got an element) can spin all four wheel from a stand still on dry pavement  if you're not "careful" .  I feel like the Element has even more power, but it is an automatic, and the CR-V was a 5 speed- same engine though.  The CR-V gets way better fuel economy then the Element, about 25 all the time- we even got over 30 once with the CR-V, but can't ever get over 26 with the element, and on trips the element only gets about 21-23.

The salesperson on your CRV test ride must be delusional.  The CRV is probably geared more toward a person who is looking for exceptional fuel economy, rather than something snappy under the hood.  Granted I have the 2001 model CRV, and it's even more lame power-wise than the new ones - when you press on the accelerator, the car has to think about accelerating for a bit. At the time I bought my CRV, though, it had more room in the back than the RAV4 during that same model year.  Sadly, the back of a 2001RAV4 looked like it might haul groceries, but certainly didn't meet my own requirements for interior roominess.

2003 Chevy Tahoe...love it! Holds everything and more! Last week I fit a Honda CR-V in the back next to my bike. All I had to do was remove the third row of seats and fold down the second row.

The gas mileage kills me, but I really do love the truck. BTW, no "little man's syndrome" here. I'm 6'7" so the size is nice for me. I have seen TOO MANY 5'5" and under men driving these behemoths. Also many little soccer moms who can't see over the steering wheel.

Yeah.  When Eric first started talking about getting a new vehicle, I went to an online site (can't remember which one now, but I can look it up for any who are interested) that asked a bunch of questions, and then made a couple of recommendations.  The top of the list looked like this:

Toyota Rav 4 v6
Toyota Rav 4
Subaru Impreza wagon Turbo
Honda CR-V

When I mentioned to Eric that we should go look at the Rav 4, his first answer was, "No way.  They're too small."  In his mind, he still have the picture of the little tiny SUV they used to make.  It wasn't until I showed him our neighbor's new Rav4 with the new body that he agreed.

OOOh. You missed out. I get around 27mpg on avg, less if I'm heavy on the turbo and more if I'm not. I can easily fit my bike in the back, but not standing up or with the front wheel on.

I70 and CO 14. My truck is not as fast as a fast car but for 7500LB it really gets up and goes.
Great in the snow also. When we had the three feet of snow in Dec I had the nieghboor college kids put chains on my tires. (for a girl I can do lots of stuff but that was to much) UNSTOPPABLE. I went down one street and three 4X4 were stuck. I did circles around them and pulled them all out. I RULE!!!!

Z-dog - 2007-03-21 1:39 AM

Which mountains are you hauling azz over? I've heard about chipped diesel trucks but never had a ride in one. I'd trade a ride with you in the truck for a ride in my car It's just a little Audi 6 cylinder with an extra 300 hp over stock form. It's a little like a blue tornado going by...

Before we did the test driving, he really really wanted the WRX.  Its been on his Christmas Wish List for the last 4 years.

And it was the first car we took for a test drive.  It was a pretty close race between the Rav4 and the wagon.  I think the only reason the Rav won is because of the interior space concerns.  Like I said before, he's coming from am SUV (Jeep Cherokee), and the Subaru felt too much like a "car".

But he agonized over it for at least three months.

I love my '98 Jeep Wrangler.  Would not get rid of it for anything, except maybe another Wrangler.  However, I am lucky enough to have an incredible Fiance who has a Honda Element, which I must say is, IMO, the best tri car out there.

Adios
