I was taught to backstroke while trying to keep my eyes focused on the wall I was swimming away from - chin tucked down. Technique could have changed, but I've not really heard about looking straight up. As for the water, some will definitely come over your face, you just kinda get used to it.

As far as I know, freestyle and backstroke kick differ very little. I've always tried to point my toes a little bit more doing backstroke, and I notice my kick is a bit more efficient. That could just be me.

Diving - keep your chin tucked down tight to your chest. Make sure your goggles are on tight. Tight chin should help keep the goggles on, provided they're adequately snug.

lvthgme - 2007-03-23 9:48 AM I have no swimming background to speak of, other than last year starting to train for tris by swimming at my gym. I've recently started going to the Masters swim practices here. They do some workouts involving back, breast, and fly - none of which have I ANY clue about, but all of which I would love to learn. Question: On the backstroke, the coach has said to keep my head level so I'm looking straight up. When I do that I get tons of water up my nose...it just pours in. What am I doing wrong? For some reason I struggle to continuously blow out my nose like I would on freestyle. When I swim backstroke, water flows over my face intermittently, but not continuously. So I just breath when my face is clear.Simply speaking, you're probably just riding too low in the water. Question: How do backstroke kick and freestyle kick differ? Other than the whole "one you're on your BACK, one you're on your FRONT" thing... They don't, really. Backstroke and freestyle are actually very complimentary strokes.Question: How in the heck do you dive in and not biff your goggles up in the process? =) Put your chin on your chest.

That's old-skool technique. Just the way head position has changed in the past 10 years in free, it's similarly changed in back. Search Google Video for "Aaron Piersol" and you'll see a great example of the world's fastest backstroker swimming that way.

Breathing - out through your nose, and plug your nose internally while you swim. Kind of hard to explain, but the muscles you use are the same as blowing through your nose, and stopping immediately.

The kick:
Both the upstroke and the downstroke are important, but the surface of the water gets in the way at different points in each kick. So you will have to put effort at different points in your kick-stroke. Also, there are two kicks in your 6-beat kick pattern which rotate your body more effectively in backstroke (this phenomenon exists in freestyle, but not as much).

A good trick when going off the blocks, is to look at your feet...that will keep the googles on your face...

Beginner swimmer here-- FWIW I get the face full of water while doing backstroke if I'm not rolling onto my side enough.
