Stawberry Fields Triathlon
63F / 17C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 22m 30s
Overall Rank = 267/449
Age Group = 45-50
Age Group Rank = 21/36
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:00 even though I didn't set alarm until 5:30 a.m. I'd been mostly awake since about 3:00 a.m. Ate granola and orange juice for early breakfast. Went to race site, sat in line to park for 25 min. and then set up transition.
Event warmup:

Stretched, went to 12 min. run and stretched some more. Put on wetsuit and waited for 1st 5 waves to start. Went into water for 5 min. about 10 min. before my start.
Swim
  • 15m 3s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was in top 15 in wave at 1st bouy, but was totally gassed. I rested a couple of times but never really relaxed and got my breathing under control. I easily lost 3-4 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Not expend so much energy getting through/past breaking waves. Practice more in open water. Anything other than smooth water takes so much more energy than swimming in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Boy it's harder to get that wetsuit off when you're tired.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions more
Bike
  • 36m 33s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 18.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was relatively easy
What would you do differently?:

Go harder in 2nd half
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Seemed to go better than time indicates. Probably indicative of how far I had to run with the bike to my rack.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Run
  • 26m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

This is pretty good for me.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder in last mile or so.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked for 5 min. Rehydrated and stretched while watching for others to finish. I recovered surprisingly quickly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Went out too hard at beginning of swim. General fitness will improve with continued training. This was my 1st tri.

Event comments:

Good race for 1st tri due to the flat course. 1st part of swim is a bit tough due to effort getting out through waves.

Overall, I had a great time despite a terrible swim. I'll chalk up all the lessons and do better next time. This was my first triathlon. I got through it with a smile and feeling good.

Scott,

Congratulations on completing your first race, how does it feel?  One comment on you fitness level concern, the more races you do the better you get at gauging the needs of your body and the race.  But you should be very proud that you did it.

Jason

Thanks for the comment.  I know it will come with training.  I'm just not the most patient one in a sport which obviously demands a ton of patience.

Good luck in the 70.3 this weekend.
