I'll be rolling of the course at about 11:30pm or so - should I get a massage directly after for recovery?

Absolutely!  And I would recommend a 20 minute ice bath before eating and going to bed.  You will feel like a million bucks for about an hour after you finish.  Then everything starts to shut down and you must sleep.  Good luck!

Yes!

And ice bath after you get back to where you are staying.

The day after, go for an OWS.  Not really to swim,  more really of an Open Water Float.  The cool water will help, as will the low impact/low stress moving around.

Go get 'em TW!

You will have just completed an Ironman, you can handle 20 minutes in an icebath.  It will greatly reduce your time to recover and the pain you will experience the next day.  Make sure you get in the water BEFORE adding the ice.

Reminds me of IMCDA last year.  We got back to the hotel and I immediately got in the bathtub.  My official IMCDA jockstrap got 2 huge bags of ice which I dumped in over my legs....ahhhhhhhhhhh.  While I was sitting there, he then went and got me 3 cheeseburgers which I wolfed down just before passing out for the night.  Good times.

I would emphasis the getting in before adding the ice part.  I'm not that smart and did my first one the other way around.  I screamed like a 4 year old girl and sprang out of the tub.  I really thought my foot froze off and was floating in the tub.

Sit down in the tub and turn on the cold water until it almost covers your legs. Then turn it off and have someone dump 2 20lb bags of ice on you and watch the clock until it's time to get out.

Post-IM, I suggest eating a double bacon cheeseburger while you wait.

I passed on the cheeseburger, but a slice of pizza and a beer was quite tasty.

Hmm...I do the cheeseburgers, pizza, and beer after 20 mile rides. Maybe that's my problem.

Yes.

And learn to massage your legs yourself. Not hard to just deeply, slowly work your fingers into all the leg muscles. You can do it sitting in a chair, on the plane, anywhere and often immediately after the event and for the next few days. It works like a champ with keeping you walking upright and pain free.
